Book Description

August 30, 2007
Poultry in a pocket-size book? Why not, when the birds in question are neatly corralled into an appealing little volume, just right for gift giving, easy browsing, or tucking into a bag or pocket for quick reference at a poultry show or auction.

More than 100 poultry pals show their amazing colors in full-page images that capture their good looks and lively personalities. Intricate feather patterns, imposing crests and wattles, and grinning beaks are just a few of their appealing features. From laying hens to heritage turkeys to adorable ducks, here are all the common barnyard favorites, plus rare breeds from around the world.

Facing each poultry portrait is an informational page offering facts about the breed and a handy at-a-glance reference bar identifying the type of poultry (chicken, turkey, duck, goose), its primary use (laying, meat, game, or ornamental bird), and its conservation status. Breeders, enthusiasts, and anyone who has ever paused to admire a handsome chicken will be delighted by the photographs and enlightened by the breed profiles in Pocketful of Poultry.

Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

Hundreds of chickens, ducks, geese, and turkeys are beautifully illustrated in this field guide. Along with the color photos of each bird are facts on the breed history, size, features, place of origin, special qualities, and conservation status. Fascinating facts and detailed photos portraying poultry features are strewn throughout the guide. The chicken section classifies each breed as ornamental, laying, or meat variety. A glossary of the conservation status terms and several pages describing the color varieties of poultry complete the book. --Sue Polanka

“Why’d the chicken cross the road?  For a copy of Pocketful of Poultry, of course.”

4.0 out of 5 stars Nice- but just an abbreviated version of Storey's Illustrated Guide to Poultry Breeds, December 14, 2007
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Pocketful of Poultry (Paperback)
This is a nice little book, but I was disappointed to discover that it is an abbreviated format of Storey's Illustrated Guide to Poultry Breeds.

If you have the other book, you should be aware that this one is just excerpted text and photos from it. Both books are very nice, but you only need one! "Pocketful of Poultry" is a good "stocking stuffer" - the larger format book has a bit more information and larger photos, so would be the better choice unless you want a small book for some reason.

1.0 out of 5 stars Black and White pictures, February 27, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
I bought this so that I could see what the grown-up birds will look like when I see the chickies in the feed stores. The pictures are in black-and-white! And most of them are overly dark. The blurb clearly states "color pictures" so I am more than disappointed, I am requesting a refund.

4.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful photographs, December 5, 2007
This review is from: Pocketful of Poultry (Paperback)
This book is chock full of beautiful photographs. It has some good solid information, too, but should not be considered a reference book. Just looking through it I am so, so tempted to get more chickens....
