Book Description

Oxford medical publications January 17, 1991
This is the first textbook to describe the recently recognized disease known as endemic elephantiasis or podoconiosis. It summarizes the author's 20 years of experience in the field, clinic and laboratory, presenting a brief history of the disease, its clinical features, etiology, pathology, management, and distribution around the world. The disease is found primarily in underdeveloped countries where many people go barefoot. It is caused by the penetration of the skin by soil particles composed of silica and alumino-siicates. The text emphasizes the importance of the early diagnosis of the disease, particularly in children and young people, and offers the information needed for treating, controlling, and preventing its occurrence.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent, March 28, 2002
This review is from: Podoconiosis: Non-filarial Elephantiasis (Oxford medical publications) (Hardcover)
A superb guide to the disease with the shortest "denial" stage in the medical book. I found it particularly useful in coming to terms with my condition and even taking pride in it. Perhaps a lighter take on the subject is to be found in Ernest Woodward Price's earlier work "Er, Does Sir Dress To The Right?"

5.0 out of 5 stars Podoconiosis in Ethiopia, June 2, 2010

This review is from: Podoconiosis: Non-filarial Elephantiasis (Oxford medical publications) (Hardcover)
While in Ethiopia, we came across the disease, Podoconiosis.
I wish we would have had this book to help us with the disease progression.

While volunteering for the hospital, we were asked to make a video of the disease and I hope the readers find it as an adjunct to the book, please enjoy the video of the disease in Ethiopia.

5.0 out of 5 stars A weighty subject, October 20, 2002
This review is from: Podoconiosis: Non-filarial Elephantiasis (Oxford medical publications) (Hardcover)
The National Institutes of Health say that there is a virtual epidemic of obesity occurring not only in the US, but in almost every advanced country--except, curiously enough--France. Fifty percent of adults over 40 are overweight, and our children aren't much better off.

As a result of reading this book, I think I've found the cause, since I believe I have this problem with at least a couple of my more "aesthetically challenged" body parts. But getting back to the present volume, this book seems to be on a timely and weighty topic that seems to be weighing equally heavily on the behinds and minds of both the general public and our health officials.
