OK, I'm writing another review on this CD and it's solely because I've been reading other customer reviews. I still think that Ms. Doss' debut CD is 5 stars, but I think she's being misrepresented a little bit. I really believe that some of the other reviewers were a bit disappointed with "A Poem..." because they thought they were getting a CD that would be kind of like Jill Scott, Ledisi, and Erykah Badu. Don't let the hair fool you, Conya Doss is not a Jill Scott, Erykah Badu type artist. She's more of a Mary J., Faith Evans artist. In fact, at times, she sounds like a perfect "mix" of their voices. I'd definetely classify her as straight "R&B", not "Neo (or Nu) Soul". Neo soul is an infusion of hip-hop, blues, jazz, spoken word, and funk. Most neo soul artist dedicate at least one or two songs to social issues and/or self betterment. Conya Doss doesn't do this. She really, really is just straight up "I'm in love...wait a minute, no I'm not" Rhythm and Blues. And there is nothing wrong with that! If you're looking for an "underground" neo soul artist, check out Goapele, Ledisi, and N'Dambi (Dallas Representing!!!). If you're looking for an "underground" R&B artist, check out Ms. Doss. You won't be disappointed.

Adding Conya Doss' name to the growing roster of neo-soul songsters seems inevitable: the Cleveland, Ohio native possesses a singing voice lodged somewhere between Jill Scott and Faith Evans, samples Curtis Mayfield, and respectfully modernizes the "old school" Norman Connors/Michael Henderson gem "You Are My Starship." Even if these elements give the perception that her twelve-song, three interlude debut, "A Poem About Ms. Doss" is rehashed R&B, it's the singer's affable vocal style that makes the CD worth owning. On songs like "Good Good" and "That's Not Love" Doss connects so beautifully and passionately with the material that listeners can't help but recognize the sincere joy she conveys through song. By the time you get to "Heaven" (a compelling duet featuring male vocalist Zero and the CD's final track) Doss will have definitely taken you to a better place.

It's too bad that a five star artist such as Conya Doss will most likely not get her just due media wise. But that's usually how it is when comes to the truly gifted atists. I bought this CD after reading all the wonderful reviews here. I'm really glad that I did, although I had to special order it because my local music store doesn't carry it (what a shame!). It's one of the best albums that I've heard in a long time. The music, lyrics, and her voice are all awesome. If this album is only to be popular through word of mouth, than I'm not going to shut up about it. I would recommend this cd to any true r&b fans.

I'm biased because Conya is a friend from college and I spent 4 years listening to her sing all over campus. BUT, I really enjoyed this album...every bit as good as any other neo-soul artist out today. I especially enjoyed the song "Selfish Ones"...I wish it were a whole song instead of just an interlude. This album is just a taste of her talent and I hope we hear more from her!

Man oh man...this sister, this cd, has changed me...I stumbled upon Ms Doss when I heard "Smile Again" on the R&B Smooth music station on Comcast digital cable...I knew paying this $60 a month was worth something...Anyway, I heard that one, just that one, song, and I went into full internet surf mode looking for any and everything on her...This is real r&b music boys n girls...not no washed up "hip hip/r&b/pouplar rapper rappin on/hip hop producer" tracks (nothing bad about those, but this ain't it if that's what you looking for)...genuine r&b flavor...and I agree with another reviewer of this cd, trying to hear some "Long Walk", or "Bag Lady", or "Brother", forget it...not hear...when I listen to this sister, I hear some Faith Evans (my favorite singer), a little Mary J. Blige, maybe a drip of Chaka Khan, and somebody else whose slipped my mind...if they only knew...if more people only knew...whatever, pick it up, search for it, find it, you will not in anyway be dissapointed. This one will be on my playlist for many many yrs to come...probably the only cd I own I can honestly say I like each and every song on it, fa real!

A cross between Jill Scott, Erykah Badu and Faith. Backed with the right kinda warm-instrumentation, over dusty vocal kalistechnics, Poem About Ms Doss is a sure thing..indeed!

Found she had a new CD out and I thought before writing my review on that one..I still owed her for this one! This CD is everything right about what good music should be. It's a strong R&B debut without all the inserted, unnecessray rap and repeated hooks, to fool you! It doesn't need to play games or use tricks to hold your attention; her voice, the music and lyrics does it all their own. This Cd remains in rotation today...at least in my collection. Good luck finding a copy..because they are hard to come by... Glad I jumped on it when it came out because I would hate to know I was missing out on such a gem!
