5.0 out of 5 stars These poems are great for 3rd-6th grade, May 16, 2000

I work in an elementary school library. We always use this book as an example for "Poems" when teaching about poems. The poems are fun for children, and not to long. The rhyming is fun and of course kids can relate to the "food" items they rhyme about. I would recommend this poem for all beginning poem & rhyme readers. Have fun-read a book!

5.0 out of 5 stars The story of my childhood, October 23, 2011

This review is from: Poem Stew (Harper Trophy Book) (Paperback)
This was THE book of poems in my house when I was a kid. For years, it was a choice between this and Disney's Cinderella as a bedtime story. When I picked Cinderella, my dad gave each character a unique voice and usually changed the ending, but with Poem Stew, it was more of a group effort.

These delicious poems are full of fantastic food imagery, from the man "crying his way down the onion rows" to Aunt Nerissa fainting when she fears her nephew has actually eaten the muffin she pressed on him before his journey. And they are contagious! After a few repetitions, children will be reciting them on their own.

The illustrations tie together poems by a variety of popular and lesser-known poets and bring the poems to life for younger readers. By the time I started school, I had memorized many of them. Every time someone we know turns two or three, my mother sends me back to the internet to order at least two more copies of this classic. I wish Harper would reprint it!
