A gift to English readers, October 30, 2006
This review is from: Poems (1945-1971) (Paperback)
Though he wrote as recently as the middle of the 20th century, Sachtouris is already considered one of the masters of Greek poetry. This collection of poems is at once deeply personal and engaged with the external realities of a country torn by war and politics. In this sense, it is also highly relevant to anyone trying to come to terms with the current state of affairs in this country.
Emmerich continues to translate with great grace and empathy. I believe this is her finest work to date. Emmerich is a poet in her own right.
