Alan Seeger's letters to his mother and others along with his daily diary make for a great read and transport you right along the front lines of WWI (aka The Great War). Alan Seeger attended Harvard and then moved to Paris where he fell in love with the French and their culture. In 1914 when WWI broke out Seeger joined the French Foreign Legion since as an American he could not join the regular French military. So great was his love for his adopted new country that he laid down his life in 1916 at the Battle of the Somme. While reading the book I discovered that alot of today's issues like inaccurate media coverage, a lame President and some disparity with Americans in general in Europe were very much present in Seeger's time as well. If you can locate a copy of this book (originally published in 1917) I highly recommend getting to know Alan Seeger who was a wonderful diarist, poet and human being.
