This review is from: Best Poems of the English Language (Hardcover)
From the Madison, WI "Capitol Times" (3/27/2008):
"I had looked down and found Mud Puddle at the bottom of a book spine, as the name of the publisher of a sumptuous and wonderful collection, 'The Best Poems of the English Language.'
"That such a fine and thoughtful volume should be published by a New York house with such a homely and comical name is what earned my respect.
"I found the poetry anthology on the windswept discount shelves outside Borders West on University Avenue, bearing the modest sticker price of $7.99. The handsome, compact volume is something you'd take on the plane or train, but it contains 650 pages of just what it claims: the best poems in English, with an introduction and commentary for each poet by Alissa Heyman. Most all of the greats you hope for are here, in what amounts to a portable treasury.
"...[T]he book does not include any poets born after 1888...It shares that characteristic with another, more expensive book of the same title, edited by Harold Bloom, but Heyman's volume isn't burdened with a bias toward dead white men.
"...Mud Puddle is associated with JacketFlap, a publisher/promoter of children's books, but they also clearly cater to adults and precocious youth. Many of these budget publishers understandably have limited distribution and promotion and visibility, so grab the books when you see them.
"Mud Puddle isn't easy to access online, and these Mud Puddle titles aren't listed in books in print, says Michael Chaim, general manager of Borders West. With the hyper-efficiency of computerized and online documentation of all manner of ephemera, maybe that will change.
" 'But we have done well with the "Best Poems" book and have reordered it several times,' Chaim says."
[NOTE: THE BOOK DOESN'T INCLUDE POEMS AFTER 1920 FOR REASONS OF COPYRIGHT. IT IS EXPLICITLY LIMITED TO PUBLIC DOMAIN. NOT AN EDITORIAL CHOICE.]

A Classic Compilation, December 11, 2008
This review is from: Best Poems of the English Language (Hardcover)
I bought this book in an attempt to broaden my knowledge of classic English poetry. I was not disappointed. I found Heyman's compilation to be a very reliable one in regards to poems that are considered classic. The poetry spans from the 7th century to the 20th, and is organized by date and author. Each poet has a short biography before a selection of their work. I found the biographies to be as interesting as the poems themselves. I think this book is a lovely piece of work and should be included in any library, public or private.
