Book Description

Everyman's Library Pocket Poets April 11, 2006
Ever since its first flowering, jazz has had a powerful influence on American poetry; this scintillating anthology offers a treasury of poems that are as varied and as vital as the music that inspired them.

From the Harlem Renaissance to the beat movement, from the poets of the New York school to the contemporary poetry scene, the jazz aesthetic has been a compelling literary force—one that Jazz Poems makes palpable. We hear it in the poems of Langston Hughes, E. E. cummings, William Carlos Williams, Frank O’Hara, and Gwendolyn Brooks, and in those of Yusef Komunyakaa, Charles Simic, Rita Dove, Ntozake Shange, Mark Doty, William Matthews, and C. D. Wright. Here are poems that pay tribute to jazz’s great voices, and poems that throb with the vivid rhythm and energy of the jazz tradition, ranging in tone from mournful elegy to sheer celebration.

I liked a lot of what was in this collection, although the definition of poetry seems to be stretched quite a bit. Still a good read and I did find some poems out of this book that I'll want to keep.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good stuff, November 21, 2008

As a newcomer to Jazz as a music form, I am pretty unclear as to what "jazz poetry" is. This is a good intro to what is jazz poetry. I do agree with the other reviewer, this is less about jazz, though the major artists are mentioned, and more about America, or life for that matter. This is just plain good stuff. It is enjoying to read this. I am not too much into poetry, I mean, I have an appreciation for all literary styles and have had always a slight passing fancy in poetry, but have never been a *huge* fan. But this is good. It's poetry, but a different slant on poetry maybe. Well worth the read.

A wonderful, tight anthology. Not really just about jazz. But about America--a country that produced a new form out of the torment of trying to understand itself. A beautiful book.
