Phenomenal.,
By A Customer
This review is from: Poems of Passion (1911) (Paperback)
This book is one of the best I have read. For a woman to write these words over 100 years ago and still have the same meaning today is amazing. It shows that some things never really change.

I've read a few poetry books by Ella Wheeler Wilcox and find them to be well written with many inspirational words too. This book is written with passion of romance from the heart. I have lots of favs in this book. Here's one quote from the book:
(a quote from Kindle location 78) And on nights like this, when my blood runs riot with fever of youth and it's mad desires, when my brain in vain bids my heart be quiet, when my breast seems the centre of lava-fires, oh, then is the time when most I miss you, and i swear by the stars and my soul and say that I will have you and hold you and kiss you, though the whole world stands in the way.

I ordered the book for the poem "Solitude" which I love, but I was not aware that this book is a reproduction of the original printed version, which means that some of the pages are hard to read where the text is not clear. And the text is big :-) Anyway, supplier was quick, and it was packaged well. I would order from them again, but I am not so concerned with original versions, just being able to read the poems.

Meloncholly Passion,
By
This review is from: Poems of Passion (1911) (Paperback)
A wonderful gem. It is a reproduction of the original that, I suppose you can't find anywhere. But the poems are beautiful though there is a meloncholly that pervades them...they are about passion, not romance. Think passion as suffering for something beautiful.
The beautiful writing is breathtaking at times, but not being able to properly catagorize these kinds of poems has led to their obscurity. I think they may be in the public domain with Project Guttenberg, I don't know. But the book is about less than $20 so the price is negligable. Besides, you'll want to read these to others, and a book is quite portable. The only thing wrong with this book is the presentation. The original pages can be seen copied. But that is a small price to pay for the words and the mood they conjure.

Ella Wheeler Wilcox's Most Famous Work,

This review is from: Poems of Passion (Kindle Edition)
"You cannot understand
how aught you speak Has the power to stir the depths of my poor heart." In my search for poetry books here at amazon I came across this lovely little collection of love poems and general poems. It is Wlla Wheeler Wilcox's most famous work. She seems to have been quite a controversial and loved poetess who spoke her mind no matter what others thought. The poems are all about grand passion and are not erotic but simply romantic. Sometimes she talks about war raging in her soul and at other times she discusses a longing for love. She also talks about unrequited love, despair and rapture. The only thing I seem to disagree with her about is her religious beliefs. In one poem in particular she discusses the idea of how each person is divine or at least she encourages us to worship the divinity in ourselves. It seemed a little New Age for her time. But anyway whatever your beliefs you can still enjoy the romantic poems. These poems are also very easy to understand even though they are quite old-fashioned. ~The Rebecca Review |
