5.0 out of 5 stars Enhanced with graphics from the princeps edition, February 21, 2001
This review is from: Poems and Prose of Mihai Eminescu (Hardcover)
Published to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the birth of Romania's national poet, Poems And Prose Of Mihai Eminescu is an impressive showcase for a remarkable talent, translated into English. Mihai Eminescu (1850-1889) was a leading nineteenth-century cultural figure who poems and prose had a profound and lasting influence on Romanian culture and literature. This edition of his poetry and prose is enhanced with graphics from the princeps edition published in 1883, and an introduction on the life and work of Eminescu by Kurt W. Treptow. Poems And Prose Of Mihai Eminescu will aptly serve to introduce a new generation of readers and students to this outstanding man of letters who was also a philosopher, journalist, and keen observer of the human scene.

5.0 out of 5 stars Charming..., October 17, 2002

Mihai Eminescu's poems are the best example of a genius' work. In order to gain an introspective look in the Romanian culture, folklore and myths, one simply has to read a single poem. You will surely love his poetry...The poem entitled " Luceafarul " - The Evening Star is his best poem, dealing with love, deception, man's condition versus the condition of the Immortals... Stop doing whatever you are doing now and start reading!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars A required lecture!, January 15, 2004

This review is from: Poems and Prose of Mihai Eminescu (Hardcover)
I don't recommend Eminescu simply because I am Romanian, but because of his extraordinary genius, the genius of a great man of letters who defined and fulfilled a culture - the Romanian culture! Reading his biography would be a good start as to the understanding of his life and his cultural endeavors. There will never be enough words to describe his strives and the complexity of his thinking and I am convinced he won't be overcome too soon. Please note that he was the first to attempt and almost finish the translation in Romanian of Kant's "The critique of pure reason", he also left behind a huge collection of manuscripts consisting of his diaries and correspondence, random thoughts, fragments of poetry as they came to his mind, rhymes, translations etc. (which they are preserved and safely guarded in the underground vaults at the Library of the Romanian Academy in Bucuresti).
In order to make you even more interested here's another quick fact: Eminescu died mentally ill, alike Nietzsche.
