4.0 out of 5 stars Bossa Nova, campfire style..., October 5, 2011
By
This review is from: O Poeta E O Violao (Audio CD)
This is a great album. The whole thing sounds very much like the two of them went into the studio, let the tape record for an hour or so, and just played one great song after the other. That's not to say they don't sound prepared - these guys have obviously been honing their musical skills for most of their lives. They banter back and forth at the start of each song, and though I don't speak Portuguese, it sounds very much like they are briefly discussing what they are going to play as if they're making up the play list as they go along ("Insensatez?" one says, and the other responds with enthusiasm "Ah, Insensatez!" as they both laugh). The whole thing sounds to me like what these guys might do in front of a camp fire on some cold night somewhere. What comes through is that these guys really love this music and have great enthusiasm for it. It doesn't hurt that they're both fine singers and sound great duetting together, and with basically the only instrument used a guitar, the whole thing comes through crisply and is not too cluttered. The album contains many bossa nova classics (Chega de Saudade, Tristeza, Berimbau, Insensatez, Garota de Ipanema (The Girl From Ipanema), among others) and many that probably would not really be considered bossa, but its all good.
