'A verra lish young lass' - a passionate romantic poet, January 3, 2005
This review is from: The Poetical Works Of Miss Susanna Blamire (Paperback)
It is a delight to discover a much more reader-friendly edition of 'The Poetical Works of Miss Susanna Blamire' than the original one of 1842 - in size, layout and price. In his review of Susanna's recent definitive biography (in 'Review of English Studies' November 2004) Professor Duncan Wu of St. Catherine's College Oxford describes Susanna as `a writer of considerable power', and he writes that the `ease and elegance' of her `rounded and compelling' biography provides `a timely reminder to those who have incorporated Hannah More, Anna Laetitia Barbauld and Charlotte Smith into the undergraduate syllabus that there is another woman poet of the time equally deserving of scrutiny'.
This new edition of Susanna Blamire's Poetical Works read in conjunction with her biography 'A Passionate Poet: Susanna Blamire 1747-94' by Christopher Hugh Maycock (Hypatia Publications 2003 - see Amazon.co.uk) provides the ideal insight into the works, mind, and life of this fascinating early Romantic poet and `argues eloquently for her critical reassessment'.
