More About the Author

Jeff Conant's non-fiction and educational writing focuses on the intersection of social justice, development, communications, and ecology. Writing A Community Guide to Environmental Health (Hesperian Foundation, 2008), involved most of a decade collaborating with grassroots development initiatives in many countries to develop popular education materials addressed to the needs of under-resourced communities.

A Poetics of Resistance: the Revolutionary Public Relations of the Zapatista Insurgency (AK Press, 2010) examines the cultural politics of the Zapatista movement of Chiapas, Mexico, where Conant worked for several years. The book focuses on the Zapatistas' persuasive use of symbolic language and colorful imagery to bring their struggle to the world's attention.

As an independent journalist he has written on climate, water privatization, resource colonization, food sovereignty, ecological sanitation, zero waste, environmental and social justice, and cultural politics for numerous publications; he won a Project Censored Award in 2010 for coverage of the World Water Forum in Istanbul, Turkey.

Conant writes fiction and poetry as well, with three as-yet-unpublished novels and a few small rare editions of poetry published on small presses.

Get it! The only book you need to read to learn about the Zapatismo unless you can get into a time machine and go back to Chiapas on New Year's day 1994. Written by an amazing activist who spent ten years writing the definitive Community Guide to Environmental Health (and translated Wind in the Blood, THE book on Mayan and Chinese medicine) this combination of poetics and symbolism has the power to change the way revolutionaries think!

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful By Dan Spalding on December 12, 2013
Format: Paperback
I just stayed up WAY past my bedtime to finish A Poetics of Resistance. Jeff Conant's beautiful, incisive, important book won't just teach you everything you always wanted to know about the Zapatistas: Are they rural farmers? Urban intellectuals? And what's with the masks*?

A Poetics of Resistance also reminds you of the high stakes game being played with our lives. Giant corporations - and the governments they own - are exploiting both people and the environment, in Mexico and around the world. The Zapatistas aren't a quaint group of indigenous people fighting for their land. They're a broad-based social movement offering an alternative way of life, one that's not just sustainable, but exciting and brilliant. Let's hope they win.

*A: It's really cold in the mountains!
