Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Briggs, a poet from Oregon, was formerly a bookseller in Greenwich Village and North Beach, active in the jazz and poetry scenes of the 1950s. Here, he performs a delightfully personal monologue that is part memoir, part scholarly appreciation. Setting the initial tone, a listener hears cool cafe jazz, written and performed on tenor saxophone by collaborator J. Stuart Fessant. Briggs begins with a philosophical rumination on the power of poetryA and its audience's lasting dedication. Then he tells about his own life as a Depression-era child from Omaha who traveled America, "on the road without knowing it." A natural raconteur and teacher, he gently provides a history of the poets who inspired the Beats: T.S. Eliot, William Carlos Williams, Langston Hughes and others. From there, he reads seminal works of the 1950s from the likes of Lawrence Ferlinghetti, Gary Snyder, LeRoi Jones and Allen Ginsberg. He ends with brief selections from his own prose-oriented poetry, capping off a highly individualistic and heartfelt program. (Mar.)

4.0 out of 5 stars Great Teaching Tool!, June 19, 2000
By A Customer
This is an interesting, engaging resource for teachers in particular. It's sometimes difficult to get high school students to understand what the Beat poets were trying to capture. "Poetry and the 1950s" gets to the heart of the matter by focusing on historical context of this group of poets and by discussing particular poets and poems.
