About the Author

John Keats was one of those immensely gifted nineteenth century artists whose work became widely appreciated only after his death. Despite the critics of the day and the fact that death at the tender age of twenty-six prevented him from maturing further as a poet, Keats managed to create some of the greatest lyrical poems ever written.

From AudioFile

Although John Keats died when he was 25, he became a hero of Romantic poetry. This collection gives a glimpse into his genius by including several of his famous odes, sonnets, as well as some longer poems like "La Belle Dame Sans Merci" and an excerpt from Endymion. Sir Ralph Richardson reads with majesty and theatrical intensity, from the smoldering melancholy of "Ode to a Nightingale" to the fierce anguish of "Hymn to Pan."Although the poems are listed in sequence, no times are given, so the listener has no idea which poems are on which side. To further complicate matters, Richardson does not introduce the poems by title. P.B.J. (c)AudioFile, Portland, Maine

Many recordings exist of Keats' poems; most are good but Ralph Richardson's surpasses them all. The timbre of his voice, his pauses and inflections never interfere with the intention of Keats, but clarify the poetry much as a fine pianist will give us Beethoven without gratuitously imposing idiosyncracies.
I have listened to these recordings over and over, and never tire of them.

The selection of poems is good. It would have been nice if the reader would have identified the title of the poem he was reading. The reading was a bit over the top at times.
