Editorial Reviews

Review

"This wonderfully laid-out, practical book explores ways of getting students interested in poetry." - CHOICE

"As a veteran teacher, I prided myself on being a 'poetry teacher.' After all, we memorized poems, tried to figure out what they meant, and even devoted a unit to the study of poetry. Haiku, limericks, color poems and fill-in-the-blank poems were just a few types we explored. However, it wasn’t until I started reading this book that I discovered the true magnetic force of the written word.  - MiddleWeb

I was at an in-service with Cappelli and Dorfman in April, 2014. I was awe-struck by their easy-to-use mentor texts. They have MANY examples for teachers to use, and the book is written for the reader to understand and implement into his/her classroom immediately. I read this book from front to back the next day, and found how easy it is to integrate poetry into your lessons to enhance the students' learning of so many skills from comprehension, vocabulary, fluency, and phonics/spelling. A MUST READ!

It is great for "raising the quality of poetry writing" but if you are a busy teacher looking for a book with lessons to introduce the various types of poetry to you class, this isn't your book. It is good for helping your students find subjects and writing better poems but i really wanted something that was a little more straight forward and easy to implement.

This is a great resource for finding poems to use with your students. It is not an exact recipe to follow, but has many examples to add to your instructional plan. Actually, I think it is my favorite of these author's 3 books and I own them all. When I received the book, I used the poems on Writer's Notebooks with my education majors as we had been using Writer's Notebooks all semester and they had felt they were one of the most valuable tools we had studied. The poems worked right into our use of Poetry Notebooks. It is not a book that I have read cover to cover, but it is one that is wonderful to explore and search through many times..
