Brief and affordable, this pocket-sized anthology focus on the poems at a cost well under that of traditional anthologiesChronologically organized, the selections represent the full range of poetic tradition from popular ballads to contemporary work.  Diversity and flexibility are reflected in the selections by women and writers of color—representing over a third of the book—and by the inclusion of virtually every traditional poetic form used in English-language poetry.  Updates include twenty-five new selections from previously unrepresented poets, as well as different offerings from previously anthologized writers.  Contemporary poets new to this anthology include Joseph Harrison, Brian Turner, Allison Joseph, Sophie Hannah, and Emily Moore.  New poems represent poets ranging from Donne, Poe, Whitman, and Hardy, to modernists including Wallace Stevens, e.e. cummings, Edna St. Vincent Millay, and Richard Wilbur

We’ve created the Penguin Academics series with ease of use in mind–the books are conveniently portable, highly readable, attractively designed, and all at a great price.

The ideal alternative to longer anthologies, this brief, affordable, and diverse collection of more than 250 poems covers the full scope of the poetic tradition.

Why do you need this new edition?

  • Twenty-five new selections include works by previously unrepresented poets, as well as new offerings by previously anthologized writers.
  • Always looking forward, this edition anthologizes works by contemporary poets Joseph Harrison, Allison Joseph, Sophie Hannah, and Emily Moore, as well as Iraq veteran Brian Turner–a 21st century soldier-poet.
  • Providing a new eye on poets whose work had been included in past editions, this edition includes new poems by poets ranging from Donne, Poe, Whitman, and Hardy, to modernists including Wallace Stevens, e.e. cummings, Edna St. Vincent Millay, and Richard Wilbur.
  • The poems in this edition both reflect contemporary social questions and represent a wide range of poetic forms, from sonnet to free verse to haiku.

5.0 out of 5 stars great anthology, February 27, 2004
This is a great anthology. The best you are going to find unless you go with one of the giant anthologies. This one is cheaper and definitely less heavy than, lets say Norton's anthology. And because it is a 'pocket anthology' it cuts out the weaker poems making this a strong group of poems.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great collection of poetry, August 31, 2010

This review is from: Poetry: A Pocket Anthology (Penguin Academics) (6th Edition) (Paperback)
I bought this book for a college poetry class and it is great. There is a whole range of poets from classical (e.g. William Blake, Edmund Spenser) to modern (e.g. Sylvia Plath, Julia Alvarez). No one poet has too many works, and they are mostly represented by their more famous works, but it is a great buy.
