It is generally believed in India that works of art are made on the basis of the normative works. The same is true in the case of Tamil literature of South India, and in particular between the oldest grammar and poetics "Tolkappiyam", and the ancient literature ("Sangam" literature) of the first to third centuries AD, consisting of about 2400 poems of love and war. This book deals with the relationship between them, with special focus on love poetry, investigating a large number of its technical terms concerning their original meanings and historical changes. The ancient love poems had a considerable influence on later literature, such as "Bhakti" literature, epics and "puranas".

If you want to learn about Sangam Tamil Akam poetry conventions, this is the book for you. It is an excellent tutor if you plan to learn about Akam poetics. In addition to a general overview of Sangam literature, he has information on Tholkâppiyam, thurai, (colophon), thinais in Akam, concepts like muthal, karu and uri which help one analyze and understand the poems, and other Akam technicalities. Also he compares Iraiyanar's Akapporul and Akkaporul Vilakkam in kalavu, varaivu and karpu in all their different phases. There is a chapter where he deals with dating Akam texts. All in all, it is an excellent book for a Sangam Tamil student.
