PoetryTagTime is a chain of poets and poems that makes language part of a playful game. When a poet is tagged, that poet must write a poem that connects with the previous poem. Part of the fun is the poet’s explanation of the sometimes whimsical “connection” between the two poems.

PoetryTagTime is a great read-aloud for all ages in the classroom or for homeschoolers and also a poetry writing model that teachers and parents can use in the classroom or home. Noted children’s literature professor Sylvia Vardell has designed curriculum activities for each poem, to be used together with the e-book; these are available for free at the PoetryTagTime blog (PoetryTagTime.blogspot.com).

PoetryTagTime is Book 1 in the series.

Book 2 in the series is P*TAG, the first-ever poetry anthology e-book for teens.

Book 3 in the series is GIFT TAG, an anthology of holiday poems to celebrate Thanksgiving, Hanukkah, Christmas, and "Mew Year's Day for Cats"!

More info on the series at www.PoetryTagTime.com.

Praise for the PoetryTagTime, P*TAG, and Gift Tag series:

“[T]he organizing principle of the book is neat, with each poet "tagging" the next to write a poem which in some way links to his or her own. Fun and cheap: 99¢! The poems are light and lively, and I'm glad to report that the line-breaks remain sacrosanct no matter how you mess with the font size.” --Roger Sutton, Read Roger

“[A] collection of poetry that simply: YOU. MUST. HAVE. . . . The results are spectacular. Here is an eBook worthy of classroom use with plenty of teen appeal. Plus, it is perfect for reading aloud as well.” --Teri Lesesne, The Goddess of YA Literature

“What a wonderful way for teenagers to encounter poetry; and the interactive nature of the e-book invites readers to explore each poet’s work more deeply.” --Marjorie Coughlan, Paper Tigers

“In the engaging poems of PoetryTagTime children will discover just how amazing and magical words can be. Delighted young listeners, readers and writers will surely rush to join the poets at play with words.” --Glenna Sloan, Give Them Poetry

5.0 out of 5 stars Love the concept and the poems! April 7, 2011
By S. Buck
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
I love this collection of poetry. The authors made it a fun game of 'tag' - one poet wrote and 'tagged' another who had to connect their poem to the previous one. Each poet explains the connection for the reader. It is clear that the intended audience is children, but the poets make it interesting and lovely for all to read.
I was especially excited to find a few poets I enjoy: Mary Ann Hoberman, Lee Bennett Hopkins, and Amy Ludwig VanDerwater. I am excited to have my students read the poems in this collection, inspiring them to create something of their own.

5.0 out of 5 stars Poetry Tag is a hit! April 5, 2011
Format:Kindle Edition
Poetry Tag Time is a great way to bring poetry and poets into the classroom. The collection is a buffet of children's poetry with a variety of styles and structures to please every taste. We are sharing this anthology in our second grade classroom as part our month-long poetry celebration. We could not get enough!

We are planning to stretch the poems over the next month. The "tag" concept was a hit. We loved reading how each author connected and drew inspiration from the previous poem. The playful commentary between the writers gives the feel of a game and invites the reader into the fun. A few aspiring poets even played poetry tag during our recess time!

In addition to the poetry, this "book" serves as a wonderful resource. Readers will meet some familiar friends and are bound to be introduced to a few new ones along the way. The collection concludes with a tidbit about the contributing poets as well as a link to their web pages. Teacher and class can continue the poetry journey by following their favorite authors.

5.0 out of 5 stars A fun, accessible poetry collection. April 5, 2011
By Marti
Format:Kindle Edition
This is a fun, accessible poetry collection. I teach creative writing to children and I especially like the many different forms of the poems in the collection. This book would make a great model for a classroom activity, where one student "tags" the next until everyone has written a poem.
Full disclosure: I received this book as a gift from one of the contributors. Since I don't have a Kindle, I would never have purchased it for myself--I didn't realize that you could read Kindle books on a PC. I'm so glad she sent the collection to me because I love it and plan to use it in my writing classes.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great Poetry Fun April 4, 2011
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
Poetry Tag Time is a fun new way to introduce and involve children in poetry. I teach creative writing K-6th which involves not only writing but reading/exploring children's poetry and literature. Poetry Tag Time is a sure way to activate student's curiosity and expose them to poetry in a format that is familiar and accessible. I am a bit sad to find any good writing in technology form, rather than in a book - but I can't deny the value of this for my students.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Great Teaching Tool March 18, 2012
By A. Lima
Format:Kindle Edition
This is the second year I have used Poetry Tag Time with my 5th grade class. The poems in it are so much more interesting to my students than most of the ones in our textbook; they are always eager when I turn on the projector and announce we're about to read from our Kindle book, whereas their reactions to the ones in the textbook are more resigned. They love being picked to come up and "turn the pages" as we read the ebook on our Smartboard, or to tap a tricky word to read its definition (a wonderful feature of Kindle books that's especially useful in a primarily ELL classroom like mine). The students love guessing what topic the "tagged" poet will use to link his or her poem to the one before, which helps keep their attention (not that their attention has ever really wandered much when we've been reading Poetry Tag Time). There are always plenty of volunteers to read the poems aloud and to point out the elements of poetry we've been learning about in each one (rhyme, rhythm, alliteration, onomatopoeia, personification, etc). This has made a great teaching tool, and I recommend it for any elementary or middle school teacher who wants a unique way to introduce their students to the joys of poetry.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Fun and Creative Way to Share Poetry April 28, 2011
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
I read and discussed Poetry Tag Time with my 5th graders as part of our poety unit. The class loved the way the unique "tagging" concept makes it stand out from other poetry books. Here are some of my students' comments:
"There are a lot of fun poems by great poets in here. The poets made some of them silly so kids would enjoy them, and we sure did!"
"It's really cool how one poet tags another and the topics keep changing."
"I like their tag idea. It makes me want to get tagged and join in too!"
"On a scale of 1 to 10 for fun, I would give it an 11."
"Please make another poetry book like this! We want a sequel."
