What a wonderfully adventurous and humorous book, and well written, too!! Mr. Powdrell has an uncanny ability to find humor and create laughter in this book while allowing the reader to explore this beautiful part of the California coastline. Adventure and humor are the ingredients in this recipe for a great book. Well done, Dave.

A fun book!Written in a non-complicated manner ala Hemingway. If you like adventure with humor mixed in,you need not be a kayaker to greatly enjoy this tome! This book is a great prescription for the person who needs to get away from it all,but only can find the time to pick up a book to escape.Mr. Powdrell hits a homerun with this book.

I laughed, I cried, and I held my breath with the talk about sharks and near-death experiences. I really enjoyed your sense of humor throughout the book, laughing out loud at times. Thank you for sharing it with me.

The author's friends must have written the other reviews of this book. There was one comparison to Hemingway that turns my stomach. The book was about several friends engaged in a couple of disjointed weekend paddling trips. The editorial description made it sound like there was an actual expedition down the coast of california and into mexico when in fact the trip was done over several different weekends. I don't have any heartburn with how they conducted their trip, what I do mind is that it was misrepresented in the book's description. I was led to believe that it was a serious sea kayaking book not a short story about a group of friends staying in hotels and paddling a couple of hours to the next surfing spot.

Entertaining, But Not Epic,
By
This review is from: Point Conception to Mexico-A Common Man Kayak Adventure (Paperback)
I read about half of this very short book which I found on the bookshelf at a vacation rental house. The book is somewhat interesting and entertaining, but, unlike other reviewers, it was obvious to me early on that the story wasn't about one big epic 300+ mile trip.
I am an ocean kayaker too, but I found the author's constant use of the word "Kayak" throughout the book annoying. It would have been easier on the reader if he substituted the word "Boat" in a majority of cases. Kayaking to me is an almost solitary sport, where groups are small, moving quietly and swiftly towards their objective. This book tells the story mostly of what happens off the water, and that story is mostly about partying. I simply imagine a band of drunken boaters rafting south, riding the Pacific swells. I deduct one star for writing style and one star because I lost interest. Nevertheless, I am considering the addition of this book to my library -- if I can get a cheap copy! As others may have observed, some of the 5-star reviews on here look suspiciously similar.

A fast read, I enjoyed the journal format of this book. These guys paddled a good chunk of the California coastline in various legs. David Powdrell does a great job of recording the adventure in his journal and shares it with us in this book. I highly recommend it.

Fun adventure of kayaking and surfing,
By A Customer
This review is from: Point Conception to Mexico-A Common Man Kayak Adventure (Paperback)
These guys are novice kayakers and strong surfers that paddled from Point Conception to the Mexican border tackling various legs over several years. It's a fun read. Probably not for the serious kayaker; more for the recreational kayaker that wants to see what the week-end warrior can do when he/she sets his/her mind to it. I enjoyed the book.

Real People Making Life and Adventure Happen!!!,
By A Customer
This review is from: Point Conception to Mexico-A Common Man Kayak Adventure (Paperback)
Creating a fact-based adventure book, filled with honesty and humor, is not easy, but the author does a remarkable job of bringing this journey along the California coastline to life. The paddlers on this trip are real people, with annoying quirks, a fondness for harmless, boyish antics, and an amazing insight into human nature. The honesty, comedy, and excitement of this book never outshine the author's deep-rooted message... pick-up a paddle and make your adventure!
