A little disappointed,

I impatiently waited for this book to be published. I have so far bought all of Erin Dutton's books. The first one I read was "Fully Involved" and I found it to be well written, the characters developed; the only thing that was somewhat blah were the love scenes and that was mostly a case of "too little, too late" and even then they weren't quite up to par. Yet, I liked the book anyway and went ahead and bought her other publications. None of them measured to "Fully Involved" and even that one cannot be considered a five star.
In "Point of Ignition" Erin Dutton seems to go on and on and on about the investigation that never seems to move. The Kate Chambers character is a little whinny I'm sorry to say. The book is full of descriptions about fires that are full of abbreviations that unless you have been a firefighter yourself, you'll have no idea what the author is referring to. A description of said abbreviations would have been nice. In this book, as well as in the afore mentioned one the love scenes are again "too little, too late". Not very good to say the least. They are lack warmth. Not Erin Dutton's best effort, hence my disappointment.

A confusing book, even for a career firefighter! I would have liked to see the "romance" between the two characters and there was none. No hot sex at all. Just a generic read and I was left disappointed.

Predictable romance,
By Sage320 (Newport News, VA United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Point of Ignition (Paperback)
Katie Chambers had planned on spending her entire career as a firefighter. It's the family business and she enjoyed the adrenalin rush from going into the fires. An injury changed her career plans however and she will spend the rest of her life as an arson investigator. Her first case involves a sports bar downtown that appears to be an obvious case of arson, until she meets the owner Alexi Clark. Alexi has battled alcoholism most of her life, but, with the help of her friends Ron and Danielle Volk, she finally had her life under control and the focus of that life was the bar the three of them started together. Alexi is furious when she realizes she is the prime suspect in burning the bar and that becomes more complicated when she feels an attraction for Katie. Katie knows she is breaking every rule by becoming involved with Alexi, but she can't resist her and that makes her more than determined to prove that someone else was responsible for the crime. Alexi is going to experience a betrayal that threatens to wreck her life and Katie is probably the only person who can save her from that.
Point of Ignition is Dutton's fifth novel and returns to the world of firefighting that she explored in Fully Involved. This is a pretty predictable romance with no surprises or suspense, but it delivers on the components that most romance fans seem to want. Dutton's writing can be uneven, depending on her books, ranging from average to very well done. This book is a little better than average, but not as good as some of her others. There's nothing wrong with this book, but it's also not memorable. If the reader is looking for something to entertain a couple of hours of reading, this book certainly fills the bill.

Dependable Dutton,

Erin Dutton is quickly becoming one of my favorite authors in this genre. Her books have been really quite good - this one is no exception.
Here, she brings us Kate Chambers, an arson investigator in training. This was Kate's only real option after sustaining an injury while fighting a fire. She comes from a family of firefighters and she desperately wishes she could be on a truck again; but is determined to do the best she can in her reassignment. Her first investigation is a bar fire that is deemed arson. Unfortunately, all evidence leads her to suspect the bar's owner, Alexi Clark. However, the more she gets to know Alexi, the more determined she becomes to prove the other woman's innocence. Her partner warns her to keep a professional distance from the suspect, but the attraction is undeniable. Alexi is devastated by the loss of her bar and the prized possessions within. She begins her own investigation and is shattered by what she discovers. She also struggles with the strong pull she feels toward Kate, the woman who believes she is capable of destroying everything she owns and loves. This book has a surprisingly small cast of characters, but the simple structure only enhances the enjoyability of the story. Alexis' friend and business partner and his wife are a complicated pairing. Kate's EMT friend brings much-needed brevity and comic relief. The entire thing is tragic, but very well written. Bottom Line - This reader can't wait for Dutton's next book. She just gets better with each one.

This is the first book I have read of Dutton's. I enjoyed it, even though it was not a deep read by
any means. |
