An elite federal agency of Internet cops goes after a California dude whose chemistry set includes the wherewithal to manufacture a superman designer drug that is probably immune to kryptonite. Bunsen burner hot shot Bobby Drayne sells purple capsules of Thor (God of thunder) to his rich web clients at a grand a pop. With Thor in their veins, they enjoy hours of ecstasy and ultra strength of body and mind that has the U.S. government and the pharmaceutical companies green with envy. The military application of Thor would give new meaning to the notion of charging up a hill; and the drug companies would salivate for a Viagra pill for the rest of the body. The stage is set to find the source of the purple wonder.

NET FORCE: POINT OF IMPACT is the fifth in the Tom Clancy inspired Internet mystery series. It is nouveau pulp fiction: fast paced, action packed, with thinly-developed characters whose role is to drive the storyline ahead at lightning speed. POINT OF IMPACT delivers on the pulp fiction promise. It is guilt-free summer reading at its best.

4.0 out of 5 stars An entertaining book., August 15, 2001
The large purple pill slides easily down the man's throat. Within minutes his skin tingles, his eyes sharpen, and his muscles bulge. This new designer drug gives its users the strength of superman and the brains of Einstein, if only the user doesn't go crazy first.

Net Force's job is to find out who is manufacturing this drug and stop him before the drug kills more people.

Should the pharmaceutical companies or the military find the person first the results could be disastrous!

This is the fifth book in the Tom Clancy created Net Force series. It's a fast paced, action packed novel that's easy to read and will keep you interested from start to finish. While these novels don't have the highly developed characters, and immense detail of Clancy's earlier works they are still very entertaining.

Net Force was at it again, using their most sophisticated technology available & the cumulative mental & physical skills of the whole team to capture two evasive drug dealers, whose product would transform an average Joe into a Superman. The pharmaceutical company was hunting them down due to the drug's marketability, the Government was doing the same thing too for it poses major security threat to the country should it fall into the wrong hand. A highly enjoyable pulp fiction as long as we don't take it seriously, & enough twists to keep us guessing till the very end.

4.0 out of 5 stars Life Is Full Of Surprises, February 29, 2004
I was fully prepared to dislike this book. To begin with, it was a gift, not something I would have chosen. I'm not a big Tom Clancy fan. I don't have anything against him, I just haven't read any of his books. The thing is, I still haven't read any of Clancy's books. Although POINT OF IMPACT has Clancy's name all over it, it was actually written by Steve Perry, someone I had never heard of.

Then there was the prologue, which contains some very hokey and contrived dialogue. By the time I got through the first few pages my eyes were rolling. Given the larger-than-life action and comic book characterization typical of this type of book, combined with what I had seen so far, I figured I was in for a real stinker.

But, to my surprise, POINT OF IMPACT turned out to be pretty good. Not a literary masterpiece by any stretch of the imagination, but entertaining and quite readable. The prologue was just a setup. To be sure, you still get the over-the-top plot, but that goes with the genre. Beyond that, there actually was some character development. Not so much for the Net Force "good guys" (I assume they're already familiar from previous books in the series) as for the "bad guy" drug maker and his sidekick. These two become somewhat familiar and interesting as the story progresses.

I enjoyed POINT OF IMPACT and I hadn't expected to. It wasn't clever or memorable in any particular way. There isn't any real depth. Still, it didn't bore me and the writing was competent. For a light read, you could do a lot worse. Fans of this genre won't be disappointed.

4.0 out of 5 stars Hard-Hitting and Gripping., July 16, 2001
Unlike "NightMoves" this book has NetForce acting more as a supporting agency to an investigation.

The plot is a lot tighter than "NightMoves", with even the friendship between Drain and Tad and Toni's pregnanacy actually fitting into the plot somewhat.

The action is a lot faster as well, with enough twists and turns to please any fan of the genre.

What scares me most of all about this is that something like "The Hammer" may be possible--it may even exist!

I liked this book a lot. It was quite full of technical details, which tend to catch my interest. The characters are well-developed and unique, and the climax is tense and full of action. One of the better Net Force books by far.

5.0 out of 5 stars the best Adult Net Force book!, April 4, 2002
Point of Impact is by far my favorite Tom Clancy Net Force book. The reasons I think this one is the best is that I could connect with the characters more. And I must admit that getting the FBI high was funny. The vorieties in characters was better. This time the book was not about money and power, but over trying to out think one. And this time the ending wasn't so predictable as some of the others, not that I didn't enjoy those too. However, over all I was able to get in the mood of this book easly and read it in three days.

3.0 out of 5 stars my review, May 3, 2001
A very special drug has been designed by a chemist/dealer. This drug has an enormous effect on people and is being sought after not only by the DEA, but also by most Pharmaceutical companies. Only Net Force has the capability to find the people behind it.

This is the typical plot by Tom Clancy, but always very entertaining. There could be some extra technical information, but I am sure some tech buffs just love this!

The characters are real, interesting and interact well. Places and situations are also interesting and the plot never gets bored.

Good reading.
