5.0 out of 5 stars The Point Man
Max August was the point man in Veitnam. Now He is a DJ in San Francisco, and soon he well get caught up in murder, magic and Russian Spies. Oh and SEX!

I read this book when it was 1st published and thought it was great then. I just finished rereading it and i still love and remember about 50% of it still. if your are an Englehart comic fan this is a must...

1.0 out of 5 stars Complete utter waste.
I don't know what else to say besides for the title. This is beyond a waste of time. The first couple of chapters keep you going into the utter waste of time of the rest. Can't believe I wasted my time reading this. Don't even bother unless you like awful writing along with a bad story.

I found The Point Man after seeing The Long Man in the bookstore. What a great story! It's a bit dated, but it works just great for Max's exploits. I enjoyed The Long Man even more, but you have to start here as the Point Man... 30 years ago. Where it all started with Max and Magick.

I look forward to more of Max August!! The downside is I have to wait another year for any more new Max...

Although a bit dated now, still entertaining reading. Great book for the airplane. Story is about a Vietnam vet working as a DJ in San Francisco. A carved lion which his uncle gave him is mysteriously stolen. His new boss, an attractive young woman who is seemingly all business, seduces him. He continues to try to track down his stolen lion, meeting some interesting good people and bad people along the way.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Comic Pro's Prose, March 11, 2010

Steve Englehart's action story zips and crackles along, throwing off sparks. It recalls his Coyote comic book of the '80s, which retained the coolest aspects of the superhero genre while adding nuanced characters and adult concerns. Englehart's prose is clear and stylish, but not overly mannered. "The Point Man" isn't Shakespeare, but it's a smashing good time.

4.0 out of 5 stars Finally....the Point Man, again., August 6, 2010
This review is from: The Point Man (Paperback)

After a long, long time, I get to read the Point Man. For some time, I have been anxiously awaiting this print, and my read. I had interviewed Steve on a radio show, and he had mentioned The Point Man being written while he was in Europe after his award winning Detective Comics run with Marshall Rogers and Terry Austin.

The adventures of Max August reflect his mastery of the craft of story telling. Comic book, TV series, or novel, Englehart knows how to pace, characterize, and build the story up effectively. With elements of Coyote, Madame Xanadu, and even Dr Strange, he imbues August with a life of his own. (Good thing too, as the Long Man is out at the same time!)

Storywise, Max August has adopted the name Barnaby Wilde. One New Years eve, a carved amber lion is stolen, and Max/Barnaby meets Cornelius Agrippa (a legendary alchemist) and Valerie Drake. Magickal forces collide around him as he realizes that he can command elemental forces, a skill which is critical to the worlds' survival.

I loved this book. Only slightly dated, it is truly a page turner, and we only had to wait 29 years for the sequel! Too bad I don't have an original copy, it would be near priceless by now!
