5.0 out of 5 stars What can you say, its a Nina Simone!, April 18, 2000
This review is from: Point Of No Return: Music From The Original Motion Picture Soundtrack (Audio CD)
What can you say, its a Nina Simone spectacle. Nina stole the night and blew away everything with her contribution to this movie. I've said it once and I'll say it again. Luc Besson's "La Femme Nikita" is a great movie, unbeaten by this one. However, both Bridget Fonda and the movie's soundtrack beats is precursor. No wonder Nina is called The High Priestess of Soul, in only five tracks you have it all. Heaven on earth with her enlighted voice on the Beatles' "Here Comes the Sun", a true sex machine of desire with "I what a Little Sugar in My Bowl" and "Feeling Good", and love with despair on "Wild Is The Wind" and "Black Is The Colour Of My True Love's Hair". She can make you laugh, cry or think about life only with the way she sings! Hans Zimmer's score also is superb but this is Nina's show. Great work. Worth buying ten time if necessary.

5.0 out of 5 stars This is the soundtrack that belongs on both movies, July 14, 2000
This review is from: Point Of No Return: Music From The Original Motion Picture Soundtrack (Audio CD)
This is a great soundtrack on two levels. The first four cuts are by Hans Zimmer and they capture perfectly the tone of both films.

There are two versions, the original by Luc Besson which has a soundtrack composed entirely of elevator music and in my opinion not worth buying.

This is the soundtrack of the American Remake. This soundtrack is wonderful. It belongs on both films.

Nina Simone has 5 wonderful tracks on this CD including the hard to find Beatles song 'Here Comes the Sun'. But the tracks by Hans Zimmer really capture the spirit of the films underlying mood and emotions. They are inspired and strangely inspirational. This is wonderful stuff and above the ordinary, a very complex and wonderful CD.

5.0 out of 5 stars Discover Nina Simone, November 8, 2001
This review is from: Point Of No Return: Music From The Original Motion Picture Soundtrack (Audio CD)
This movie soundtrack I fell in love with the first time I had seen the film. I wanted to find out why Maggie was so moved by this woman's voice. It has since turned me onto Nina Simone myself, she is everything from soulful to gospel to blues and more. Discover her yourself, you won't be disppointed! This is one of my favorite soundtracks.

Thanks for reading!

4.0 out of 5 stars Not too shabby, February 7, 2000

Once the end credits to the movie began to roll and Hans Zimmer's rhapsodic main theme took over, I knew I had to buy this album. An unusually good soundtrack, particularly in its track selection: the first half consists of primarily synthesizer-based, percussion-laced variations of the main theme, while the warm analog recordings of Nina Simone fill the second (so disparate sounding are tracks like the melancholy "Wild as the Wind" and "Black is the Color..." from Zimmer's score that they had to literally place them on opposing sides.)

But Zimmer fills his score with a brooding intensity - with the occasional interjections from the vocals and electronic drums, and almost always follows it with a cathartic reed motive; a rather complex musical portrait of Maggie (the main character) emerges.

5.0 out of 5 stars YOU CROSS THE POINT FROM THE MOMENT YOU PUSH "Play", May 25, 2008

This movie was one of the rare exceptions of remakes being comparable to the original - and it comes with one of my all time favorite OSTs. Not only did it introduce me to the haunting voice of Nina Simone but it also contains some of Hans Zimmer most unusual work.

The first four (instrumental) tracks are powerful and melancholic, whereas the last five are a good collection of Nina Simone's most powerful songs.

This soundtrack can be enjoyed even without having seen the movie but I would advise not to miss on it.

HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!

First, here's the short version: the CD is fantastic, even if the movie itself is not.

Now, the long version:

You'll want to have this CD in your collection if you're a Hans Zimmer and/or a Nina Simone fan, but those are probably the only two reasons why you'll want to have it. This is one of those CD's where the music just might outshine the action of the film. You can find out more about what I mean when you read my review of the video.

4.0 out of 5 stars Mix of modern scoring and old-time vocals create a 4-star CD, May 30, 1999

This review is from: Point Of No Return: Music From The Original Motion Picture Soundtrack (Audio CD)
Hans Zimmer is a talented composer who specializes in action pictures: the 4 tracks he has on here are perfect for the film. The score picks up the films frenzy tone and escpecially captures the desperation of Maggie, the female assasin played by Bridget Fonda.

"Hate" is a great piece and "Happy Birthday Maggie" is strangely calm and yet dangerous. Great CD!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Mood Album, October 7, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Point Of No Return: Music From The Original Motion Picture Soundtrack (Audio CD)
I listen to this album when I want to decompress with a bottle of wine and escape to another place in my mind. Anything Nina Simone is artistically flawless, but few can conjure up the relaxed, sensuous and moody state of mind and emotions Ms. Simone delivers.
