If you're an adult learner who has always wanted to play piano, but been frustrated before for whatever reason, this has to be the book for you - whether or not you read music or know any music theory! This is an older piano course (hint: it's probably still in print because it works so well) and this edition is the five separate volumes combined into the complete course within a single text of about 135 pages. Buy this one book and forget any other piano self-teaching course out there! If you have an electric keyboard at home and want to buy a book on how to get the most out of your electric keyboard, then get that if you want, but otherwise this one book will give you enough to work on for at least six months to a year (depending on how much you practice the excercises). Buy the time you work your way though this book, you will be a credible piano player that can 1)sight read just about any sheet music put in front of you,2) know all the essential chords, in all keys and 3)have learned a decent amount of music theory. There is no author attribution for the course, but whoever put this together had to have been intelligent & insightful, one heck of a piano teacher and a pretty fine musician! The reason it is called the Pointer System is because the course teaches you to play the chords (which are played with the left hand) by pointing at the correct key on the keyboard using the pointer finger of the left hand. I cannot say enough poisitive things about this book!

Just so there is no confusion I should say that while I am not a music professional I am a talented amateur brass player that has played for over 45 years starting in elementary school.

This was a great buy for a used book in very good condition.
It is a gift to myself. I heard of Pointer system from a friend, who said that
once she was introduced to the pointer system, it all made sense. Up to that point she
had trouble with chords. I'm hoping to have the same result.
