Editorial Reviews

Review

Inspired by the vast arid landscapes of the Sonoran Desert, Points of Origin takes a unique approach to Native American music. The Album merges the talents of Anthony Wakeman and Mr. Soon (a.k.a. Joe Jakob), who have created a deep, spacious work that manages to be both Native American influence and blissfully otherworldly at the same time. Wakeman takes a subtle, introspective approach to his flute playing, which makes it a perfect fit for the slow, dreamy nature of Soon's atmospheres. The synthesizer textures that comprise the background have a fluid, almost oscillating sound that calls to mind a brisk wind-perfect imagery for the Southwestern theming of the album. Throw in some rhythm on a few tracks and you have a very entrancing album that wears its organic roots on its sleeve, while using creaive synth work to create a sense of levity. --By Dan Cowan - Music Design / InReview Jan./Feb. 2008

Wakeman's (Gunlake Band of Potawatomi / Oglala Lakota) first Canyon release, Butterfly Dreams, was a finalist for the New Age Retailer's Narcissus Award in 2005. Mr. Soon (a.k.a. Joe Jacob) creates ambient soundscapes inspired by his love of the wide-open spaces of the Sonoran Desert. This collaboration is full of dreamy, contemplative pieces with sounds that evoke both inner and outer space. Soon's measured keyboard work provides huge ringing blocks of sound drenched with overtones to complement Wakeman's long, shimmering cedar flute melodies. There's more than an hour of quiet, soulful music here, making it perfect for yoga, meditation and relaxation. --By J. Poet - Native Peoples / Sept.-Oct. 2008

Product Description

The haunting tones of native american cedar flute meld with mesmerizing sample-based textures, minimalist guitars and drifting atmospheres to evoke ambient landscapes of breathtaking grandeur. On a sonic journey both exotic and familiar, two diverse artists chart the points of origins within themselves and within us all.

5.0 out of 5 stars Highly recommend, July 1, 2009

Simply mesmerizing.

I purchased several CDs, this being one of them. I haven't had the least inclination to listen to the other CDs as of yet. Track seven - Not Meant for Battle - is one of the most hauntingly beautiful pieces of music I've ever heard.
