I would highly recommend this book as a "required read" for college students getting ready to graduate and make the transition into the workforce. I checked out 5 different books from the library on business etiquette and this one was, by far, the most professionally written, the most straight forward, and it offered intelligent, trustworthy advice. This one will be on my permanent bookshelf soon and I will continue to highly recommend this one to anyone looking to polish their professional etiquette skills.

Poised for Success is broken out into four parts: Presence, Polish, Professionalism, and Passion. Jacqueline believes that when mixed together, these are the ingredients that make a successful professional.

"... the ones that get ahead are often those who are able to muster enough courage to take risks and connect from the heart."

In her latest release, Jacqueline takes our hand and guides us through the maze of the business world. If you think your looks, your voice, and the manner in which you communicate make no difference in where you will end up in life... think again.

This isn't a preachy manual. This is a book that sheds light on how we are perceived by others no matter what industry we work in. A book that will become your friend. A book that I believe should be a required part of any business ensemble.

"Presence isn't something you put on in the morning and take off in the evening; it's a part of your essence."

Jacqueline helps us examine our appearance, the way we sound, the way we will ultimately market ourselves to the world. She teaches us to communicate from the "outside in." Helps us form, maintain, and grow professional relationships.

"Rise and Shine: you'll be impressed with the results, because others will be impressed with you."

But this book is more than just undeniably helpful tips. Weaved into the advice, are glimpses into the life of a woman who made herself what she is today - a success. Jacqueline shares personal stories from her life. Stories that show how she has put the knowledge gained over her lifetime to use.

In short, Poised for Success has become my everyday reference guide; the guide that will help me traverse the often daunting road of business, leading me toward my own personal success.

I'm a fan of etiquette reference books because I tend to be old school in what I expect as acceptable and polite social decorum. That said, I'm also a tech-savvy GenY - I interact with most of my peers via social media. "Poised for Success" covers classic topics (appropriate professional dress) while also providing tips relevant to younger professionals in the early stages of their careers. For instance, Ms. Whitmore reminds us how to cultivate and maintain relationships with V.I.P. individuals -- most of whom are from a previous generation. My favorite part of the book is the discussion about networking. Poised for Success emphasizes the value of having connections who are different from ourselves. I agree. One doesn't grow much from being in an environment of people who mostly agree with your perspective. Getting insight from others who can provide you with perspective different from your own is how we most gain value from our networks! In addition, exchanging emails with Ms. Whitmore, I find that she practices what she has preached. She is a warm and friendly professional with a kind heart. Great reference book to have on one's shelf, and a must-read for young professionals.

"I discovered Poised For Success to be quite a rare find. Among all of the similar etiquette and self help guides lining the shelves, Poised rises above them all. It's particularly exceptional due to the fact that male or female, of any age group or of any social class, the reader will retain knowledge certain to enhance their life and the lives of those around them. Poised For Success is far more than a book, it's a road map to guide any and all to a fulfilling and more prosperous life. Dearly departed Emily Post certainly has some spirited competition and luckily it takes up less room on the book shelf!"

In Poised for Success, Whitmore has created a much-needed guide for young, budding professionals who wish to make their mark in the world of business, but need to hone their "soft" skills. I've always protested at that term, and Whitmore does so as well, positing that the skills traditionally considered soft may not only be the hardest of them all, but also the most necessary.

I particularly enjoyed and connected with Whitmore's advice on personal presence, style and how you sound. People don't pay nearly enough attention to their vocal qualities and the words they use, and as this book notes, it definitely can affect your entire career. I'd give this book to my whole team if I could, particularly when hiring entry-level employees and those looking to advance beyond a trade-style position into management and company leadership.
