Book Description

Den of Antiquity Mysteries May 26, 2009

All antiques dealer Abigail Timberlake Washburn wanted was to find a perfect gift for her darling (if not altogether together) mama Mozella's birthday. She never expected her online purchase of an exquisite, seventeenth-century rosewood linen chest to place her in federal custody, accused of trafficking in illegal ivory! Then insult is heaped on her injury when she's forced to turn to her lawyer-snake ex, Buford, to spring her—since ex-cop /current hubby Greg's “good ol' boy” contacts don't happen to include any feds.

Abby may be small in stature, but she's a force to be reckoned with when riled—and she's determined to root out the real smugglers who she blames for her recent indignities. But in her zeal to stick it to the elephant eliminators who have invaded her beloved Charleston, Abby might just land herself and mama alike up to their pearly whites in lethally hot water!

2.0 out of 5 stars Not impressed, January 28, 2010
This review is from: Poison Ivory (Den of Antiquity Mysteries) (Mass Market Paperback)
I love mysteries. I love antiques. So I was excited to see a book that combines two of my passions.

But I just wasn't impressed. The characters are unbelievable and way overdone. A dingbat leading lady, a sidekick who thinks she's Chinese and lies consistently, an elderly mom with a shoe fetish, and situations that are unbelievable at best. I could handle this stuff normally, but it was all so distracting I nearly lost the storyline.

This book was more a political statement than a cozy mystery novel to curl up with. Rather than allowing me to "fall in love" with her characters, the author preaches about the evils of hunting and Republicans. Her political bias not only shines through, but blinds us.

If you're conservative like I am, you won't be happy about her incessant jabs at our values. I kept reading though, but almost put it down when she described a tacky velvet painting of George W. Bush surrounded by flames. It was a painting of him in Hell, "where he should be." I'd rather send this book down there.

Would someone please get this poor woman an editor. I have read all of Tamar Myers books and this is the worst. Disjointed, inconsistent story line, misidentified characters - a very sloppy offering from this author. Do not buy or waste your time reading this book.

3.0 out of 5 stars Great start, ridiculous ending., August 1, 2011
This review is from: Poison Ivory (Den of Antiquity Mysteries) (Mass Market Paperback)
I do like the Den of Antiquity mystery series, quite a bit. The lead character is wonderful and so are supporting characters. I found that Poison Ivory was funny, entertaining and filled with great dialogue between the characters. The only two negatives for me was that from chapter 23 onward the storyline became unbelievably ridiculous and silly that it ruined the ending of the novel for me.

Plus the editing for this novel wasn't great. I was surprised to see quite a few misspellings, etc. for this book. I thought editors took care of these type of issues for the author before the book was published.
