Dave Klopp (Milwaukee, WI USA) - See all my reviews

Back in the mid 90's, Thursday nights were the official start of the weekend, and we would invariably start with a "group acceptable" movie and a few cocktails at someone's apartment, before invariably heading out into the night. I put "group acceptable" in parenthesis, because "acceptable" was a bit of a misnomer; the only movies that everyone agreed upon were non-plot driven flicks with semi-starlets, who, thankfully enough, were kind enough to appear sans clothing at various times during the course of the show. This movie was one of the last we saw before switching over to Antiques Roadshow (don't ask), and eventually disbanding. I decided to review this movie because now, 4 short years later, I have become fairly domesticated (as has everyone else), and drinking on Thursday's has become a fond, albeit hazy memory from the past, and I want to do my part to ensure that this great piece of cinema is not dismissed as just one more piece of exploitative, late-night HBO soft-core filler that it appears to be.

To hold this movie to the same standards as a regular movie would be a disservice to it, and I think it should be rated against other movies of its genre:

1) Nudity - 5 Stars - What can I say except for bravo. Veteran B-movie writer Karen Kelly has managed to create a plot where nude scenes seamlessly flow into each other, and actually kind of make sense. One constantly expects Ron Jeremy to make a quick cameo; the quality is that good.

2) Starlet Quality - 1 Star- At the time of this movie Jaime Pressly had only one previous acting role (playing the pre-teen American girl in Mercenary), and the excitement factor knowing she was soon to be nude was just not there. (For an example of a 5 star in this category, check out Nicole Eggert in "Blown Away", which is, possibly the greatest nude/starlet movie ever made).

3) Acting - 5 Stars - The acting.... Wooden? Terrible? Mind-Numbing? Yes! And More! I've always felt that the amount of nudity should be inversly proportional to the quality of acting. I call it the erotic neuron quotent. Think of the 10 minutes between nude scenes as a big neuron, and your attention span as the surge of electricity running its length. As you watch the fully clothed bad acting, you start to get annoyed, and begin to lose interest (as the electric charge does as it runs the length of the neuron). By minute 9 you are fumbling for the remote, and about to stop the tape, when WAM! , the new nudity recharges the battery (as does the charge as it moves to another neuron) and you are good for another 10 minutes.

Determining the final score can be tricky. One suggestion is to add the three categories up, divide by 3, and then add 1 point for every nude scene over 3. Or, if you have seen the other two installments, you could get the guys together, pour a pinot noir, and compare and contrast the merits and plotline on your own. Whatever your method, Good Luck, and Happy Viewing!

5.0 out of 5 stars jaime pressly as sexy dominatrix...wow!, December 18, 1999
Gorgeous, sexy young blonde actress Jaime Pressly plays a dominatrix who takes revenge on her enemies by seducing and killing them. She uses all the tricks - chains, handcuffs, whips, to bring her men to submission and then strikes. Great sexy concept, like Basic INstinct or Body of Evidence. If the idea of an innocent-looking luscious girl tying up, torturing and killing helpless men turns you on, watch this movie!

4.0 out of 5 stars The Best "Poison Ivy" so far., November 7, 1999
By A Customer
Clearly the the most erotic of the "Poison Ivy"movies. Jaime Pressly who plays Violet really takes the movie toanother level. Lets not forget Athena Massey who plays her mother who is also HOT. Megan Edwards played her role well as Joy but dose not show any skin, not that she needed to she was really sexy. The DVD has both the Unrated and R-rated versions and bot fullscreen and widescreen formats, It has no other options like commentary. Buy it if you are a fan of the "Poison Ivy" movies and if you want to see how HOT is Jaime Pressly.

(took off one start 'cuse there is no Commentary)

4.0 out of 5 stars Lighten up! It's just a movie., May 23, 2003
By A Customer
Let's see. A good hint that any plot you might decipher from this movie (other than T&A) is an obvious afterthought might be the fact that it is "unrated"! Hello! It's 85% sex and nudity! Who needs a "plot"? This isn't just sex and nudity for its own sake either. Well, actually, maybe it is. The naked women are gorgeous and sultry, though. Athena Massey as Rebecca and of course, Jaime Pressly as "grown-up" Violet turn in top-notch performances in the flesh.

In the interest of fairness, the plot is defintely weak but believe it or not, is not as weak the bad reviews here are making it out to be. There have easily been thousands of "naked seductress wreaks havoc on hometown" movies and this one is no better or worse than any of them, story-line wise. But that's not the point. This is not *supposed* to be an intelligent movie. So if you don't get turned on strictly by the hot, barenaked bodies, you're definitely thinking too much and taking the movie entirely too seriously.

5.0 out of 5 stars A rather pleasing erotic thriller in the mold of Scourned., June 4, 1998
By A Customer
It's not a book but a video and Jaime Pressly is the female lead. A very attractive blonde in what seems to be her first role. It's in the same league as the Shannon Tweed film Scourned and just as flawed from time to time. This is not like Verhoven-Douglas-Stone mega hit, but more an after midnight Showtime/HBO R rated romp. More than a silly excuse for a plot placed between Jaime Pressly taking her clothes off (which she does several times and she's rather hot). Her acting is generally above average. It runs more like a Red Shoes Diary segement than a Love Street segement. Well worth a look if you're into B softcore stuff with more than just a silly plot. END

5.0 out of 5 stars Jaime Pressly....nuff said, May 19, 2002
Forget the plot. Forget the storyline. The best reason to get this movie......you see Jaime Pressly NUDE!!! Not just once. Not just for a couple seconds. You see her NUDE early and often. The script isn't bad to boot which makes this a great movie...

1.0 out of 5 stars 95 minutes of my life that I'll never get back.................., October 26, 2005

(REAL NAME)
Poison Ivy: The New Seduction is the third film in the soft-core erotic thriller series that began with the 1992 theatrical release of the first film starring Drew Barrymore and continued with the awful 1995 direct-to-video sequel starring Alyssa Milano.

This third 1997 direct-to-video entry in the pointless series stars a then relative unknown Jaime Pressly (no relation to Elvis) who actually was Drew Barrymore's nude body double in the original movie. She has a nice body and is frequently nude, but trying to make it through this movie is the equivalent of smacking yourself upside the head with the DVD box for 95 minutes straight.

The "plot" (if you can call it that ) involves a young girl named Violet (Jaime Pressly) who moves in with her childhood friend Joy Greer(Megan Edwards) and Joy's wealthy father Ivan (Michael Des Barres). Turns out that Joy and Violet were childhood friends and Joy's parents seperated when her mom found out that her father had an affair. Anyone with a working brain cell knows that Violet intends to take over the house and move in on Joy's father so she can get to his money. Violet is also a hooker and proceeds to try to ruin everyone's lives while trying to get what she wants. At one point she interferes with Joy and her boyfriend by slipping a drug in some punch to knock Joy out for awhile. While she's incapcitated, Violet seduces Joy's boyfriend. She also does her best to flirt with Joy's dad by putting on some of his wive's slinkiest dresses that for some reason still hang in his bedroom closet. The movie culminates with a finale that is as laughable as it is just plain stupid in which Violet ends up holding Joy and some other people as hostages in their own home while she tells them what her true intentions were all along.

If I had tried to type a plot synopsis for this movie any longer I'm sure my brain would have exploded.......

While I liked the first Poison Ivy on a purely guilty pleasure level, anyone who has seen the 2nd one starring Alyssa Milano knows that these movies have become nothing but an excuse to see a very attractive young up & coming actress nude and (hopefully) in numerous explicit sexual situations.

Well, Poison Ivy 3 fails on all levels. First of all, there isn't all that much sex in the movie and most of what is shown isn't that much more explicit than some R-rated soft-core fare. The DVD my friend had insisted that I borrow from him (because he thinks that Jaime Pressly is the greatest thing since sliced bread) has both the R-rated and unrated cuts on it. The only version I watched was the unrated version and a comparison of the running times list on the box seemed to show that the R-rated cut was missing about 2 minutes of (presumably) sex that was in the unrated cut.

Most of the more explicit stuff is implied and framed in a way that you don't actually see the act taking place (like a potentially hot but completely squandered scene in which Violet gives Joy's boyfriend oral sex in the piano room for instance.) I thought this was inexcusable. Soft-core porn thrillers are supposed to be crammed with explicit sex. Maybe if the director and cast had been a lot more willing throw in all kinds of kinky and explicit sex at the very least this movie would been worth a rental just for that. This was planned as an unrated film all along so if I had been the filmmaker I would have delivered on what people wanted to see: Jamie Pressly having lots of explicit simulated sex!

Another problem is that I just didn't find Jaime Pressly to be all that attractive (and I'm sure I'm in the minority here). Sure, her body is toned and quite nice to look at, but her face was just horrible. It literally looks like someone stretched her eyes over her face. Also, her voice was the equivalent of someone scratching their nails down a chalkboard. She made me cringe everytime she opened her mouth. Fans of the now somewhat famous actress will find a lot to like as she does a bunch of nude scenes including one where she pours wine over her bare breasts while seducing Joy's boyfriend. (She has an absolutely fantastic butt BTW.)

The acting is terrible, and the direction is comparable to a really bad made-for-TV movie that you might see on the USA network. There's just not one redeemable thing about this whole movie IMO. Even funnier, my girlfriend fell asleep about 15 minutes into the movie and woke up near the end. She was able to summarize everything that has happened since this movie is nothing but a treasure trove of soft-core cliches.

But hardly anyone watches these type of films for the story, and I guess if you find Jaime Pressly attractive than this movie will make a worthwhile rental. But if you're like me, and you don't find her to be all that she's cracked up to be looks-wise, this movie should be avoided at all costs.

Poison Ivy:The New Seduction is unrated and contains strong sexual content, nudity, language and violence.

5.0 out of 5 stars Awesome!, December 10, 2006
I just happened to see this film on cable tv one night.I didnt expect to enjoy it as much as I did.The fact that people complain that this film didn't have a plot is laughable.Of course it doesnt have a plot! What were you expecting,Gone with the Wind?It is just one of those films that you watch if you are a guy who wants to see a hot chick nude and looking sexy for an hour and half, to temporarily forget about your miserable life(Or the fact that you will never have a girlfriend as hot as Jaime Pressley).Jaime Pressly is unbelievably sexy in this film. She's absolutely nude in most of it,and even when she is clothed, she still is extremely hot!It is defintely worth the purchase!

5.0 out of 5 stars DAMN!, July 28, 2003

I didn't give this movie five stars for Oscar-winning performances. Yes the cast does do an okay job, but Jaime Pressly's flawless body steals the show. Like I said, DAMN! So, if you're looking for a deep, thought-provoking movie look esle-where, but if you wanna see a great T&A flick this is the one.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Convincing Seduction...Flawless ad well done!, January 22, 2003

You know how you have those movies where the woman is trying to seduce everyone but you look at her and say "Come on, I would have resisted! Not this one partner, I don't think anyone could look at this woman long enough with out charging! Jaime Pressly (Violet) was a perfect beauty with an extreme sexy voice and smurk! Gee Wizz...she was the best I have ever seen in any of these so called seduction flicks! There are a billion of them at the video houses but this one is supreme over all. The pool scene was amazing and Jamie's body is so so natural and flawless! I can understand how she succeeded in this film with her rampage! I think anyone would have fell for this web of deceit. The big downfall to this movie is the rushed ending. If it wasn't for the ending I would have given it *****'s. The ending was disappointing because the movie trotted so well. In all honesty I think they were running out of film and money. Jaimie's character was so slick and beguiling and in control. Then all of a sudden she just lost it and control of everything and it didn't flow in my opinion. Noone that slick and smart just gets sloppy without some reasonable explanation. But all the way up to the last 15mins of the movie it is an exotic masterpiece! If you are looking for other great Seduction movies with a Convincing in appearance female? Check for Lost Highway and Lifeforce! I don't think there will ever be another (Grade C) seductress film this Perfect in appearance or performance. Why? because beauty is in "The Eye of the Beholder" and this is a Beauty that I think everyone can agree with Male or Female. Watch out for Violet ...she will intrique you!
