Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com

Sight unseen, it's tempting to dismiss Poison Ivy as a teen variation on your standard trashy erotic thriller, a genre born with such promise in Body Heat that has since been in steady devolution. But while Ivy is no Heat, it's better than virtually any of those movies that star someone named Shannon. Crisp directing is supported by a script that takes a smart look at dysfunctional family dynamics, but most of all, it's the performances. Much has been made of Drew Barrymore's perfect casting as the title character, but she also does a sneaky and subtle job of straddling the fence: is Ivy a desperate, lonely young woman, an evil barracuda, or both? Tom Skerritt matches her step for step, playing the fallen husband as both hopelessly vain boob and genuinely lost soul. Cheryl Ladd delivers a sharp, minimalist performance as his Beverly Hills trophy wife dying of emphysema--becoming the still-life center of everyone else's life. And Sara Gilbert does a fine job in a role that gives her all the heavy lifting, playing tortured straight man to this pathetic and compelling tree full of coconuts. This DVD features both R-rated and unrated versions. The latter shows a bit more skin, although it's still fairly tame compared to the average skin flick. It also leaves Ivy a bit more ambiguous, and is thus a bit more fun. --Geof Miller

4.0 out of 5 stars Posion Ivy on DVD, November 7, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Poison Ivy (DVD)
The first of the "Poison Ivy" movies, were DrewBarrymore shines in her role as Ivy. New Line did it again this is agreat DVD it has the unrated and the R-rated versions of the movie and both in Full Screen and Widescreen versions. Othere than that and the Original trailer there is nothing intresting in the DVD. Some Commentary would have been great but I guess you don't get everything in life. If you like Drew Barrymore then Buy it its great.

(took off one start 'cuse there is no Commentary)

5.0 out of 5 stars A Coup D'Etat for Katt Shea Ruben and Drew Barrymore!, March 17, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Poison Ivy [VHS] (VHS Tape)
Multi-talented, but heretofore little-known, director Katt Shea Ruben scored a brilliant, sudden and unusually highly successful stroke of genius in this highly erotic thriller about an under-privileged girl, newly admitted to a posh private school. Drew Barrymore brilliantly portrays Ivy, a sexy, street-wise and lethal Lolita that will do anything to fit in. Sara Gilbert portrays Cooper, a rich, smart, but misunderstood young feminist in search and need of a friend. Through Cooper, Ivy is ushered into a privileged world, and is instantly intrigued. Cooper's father (Tom Skerritt) is a handsome TV newscaster; her mother (Cheryl Ladd) is a beautiful Beverly Hills wife. Yet tensions in the home run deep, providing license for malice that Ivy is quick to seize. With one quick seduction, Ivy sets off a chain reaction that makes 'Poison Ivy' one of the most provocative and erotic films, of the erotic thriller genre, filmed to date. If you somehow missed this gem, give it a look soon. It is one of those very rare films you can enjoy again and again! Excellent!

4.0 out of 5 stars Dangreous and Hot, April 23, 2005
This review is from: Poison Ivy (DVD)
Ivy is the new, crazy girl in school. Sylvie is the lonesome, geeky, rich girl. Once Ivy and Sylvie meet, they become pretty good pals. Sylvie invites her to ride home, she also invites Ivy into her house. She was making a deadly mistake.

Anyone can tell that something is definitely odd about Ivy, but she is charming to anyone around her. Sylvie's sick mother is always depressed, but when Ivy comes along, Sylvie's mother starts to love Ivy. Sylvie's dad is really starting to get closer to Ivy, too. But Sylvie herself starts to regret the day that she talked to Ivy, because Ivy is starting to ruin her life. But Ivy wants to stay in Sylvie's house, and whatever Ivy wants, Ivy gets.

This movie was really entertaining throughout the whole thing, and it always kept you wondering what horrible thing that the misuderstood Ivy was going to do next. You were always trying to understand Ivy, wanting to know more about this strong character. This movie was chilling and definitely sexy, and overall, it's a good film.
