Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com

Joel Silver (48 Hours, Die Hard, The Matrix) has a theory about action movies--you need a good bang-up scene about every 10 minutes. The people who made The New Seduction operate on the same principle, only instead of car chases and explosions, the curvaceous Jaime Pressly takes her clothes off and then, more likely than not, has sex with someone. If Seduction had been made 60 years ago at Warner Brothers, nobody would have gotten naked, but otherwise this gleefully trashy bit of film noir would have fit right in. The plot's a reworking of the original; this time, Ivy's sister Violet returns after 11 years to wreak havoc on the family that turned her mother (the family maid) out onto the street for sleeping with the man of the house. Pressly brings both a smoldering energy and sense of fun to her very-bad-girl part. As the lonely daughter who was Violet's best friend, Megan Edwards is both appealing and strong enough to avoid being simpy. While this movie lacks the relative subtlety of the original, it's a whole lot more fun than the morose first sequel, Poison Ivy 2. --Geof Miller

Product Description

The quiet home of a suburban family is suddenly destroyed when Ivy's beautiful but evil sister Violet returns to her childhood home and shatters the life of her former best friend Joy. Using her sexuality as a weapon she seduces both Joy's father and fiancee. No deception is too treacherous no seduction too dangerous and no crime too heinous for this twisted temptress whose young life was torn apart by an ill-fated affair between her mother and Joy's father. Poison Ivy 3: The New seduction is a steamy pulse-pounding erotic thriller and continues the same provocative and chilling tradition of Poison Ivy and Poison Ivy 2: Lily. Year: 1997 Director: Kurt Voss Starring: Michael Des Barres Megan Edwards Greg Vaughn Susan Tyrrell Jamie Pressly Athena MasseyRunning Time: 93 min.Format: DVD MOVIE Genre: DRAMA UPC: 794043484827

4.0 out of 5 stars Plot? Who needs it!, February 5, 2001
By
Dave Klopp (Milwaukee, WI USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Poison Ivy - The New Seduction (DVD)

Back in the mid 90's, Thursday nights were the official start of the weekend, and we would invariably start with a "group acceptable" movie and a few cocktails at someone's apartment, before invariably heading out into the night. I put "group acceptable" in parenthesis, because "acceptable" was a bit of a misnomer; the only movies that everyone agreed upon were non-plot driven flicks with semi-starlets, who, thankfully enough, were kind enough to appear sans clothing at various times during the course of the show. This movie was one of the last we saw before switching over to Antiques Roadshow (don't ask), and eventually disbanding. I decided to review this movie because now, 4 short years later, I have become fairly domesticated (as has everyone else), and drinking on Thursday's has become a fond, albeit hazy memory from the past, and I want to do my part to ensure that this great piece of cinema is not dismissed as just one more piece of exploitative, late-night HBO soft-core filler that it appears to be.

To hold this movie to the same standards as a regular movie would be a disservice to it, and I think it should be rated against other movies of its genre:

1) Nudity - 5 Stars - What can I say except for bravo. Veteran B-movie writer Karen Kelly has managed to create a plot where nude scenes seamlessly flow into each other, and actually kind of make sense. One constantly expects Ron Jeremy to make a quick cameo; the quality is that good.

2) Starlet Quality - 1 Star- At the time of this movie Jaime Pressly had only one previous acting role (playing the pre-teen American girl in Mercenary), and the excitement factor knowing she was soon to be nude was just not there. (For an example of a 5 star in this category, check out Nicole Eggert in "Blown Away", which is, possibly the greatest nude/starlet movie ever made).

3) Acting - 5 Stars - The acting.... Wooden? Terrible? Mind-Numbing? Yes! And More! I've always felt that the amount of nudity should be inversly proportional to the quality of acting. I call it the erotic neuron quotent. Think of the 10 minutes between nude scenes as a big neuron, and your attention span as the surge of electricity running its length. As you watch the fully clothed bad acting, you start to get annoyed, and begin to lose interest (as the electric charge does as it runs the length of the neuron). By minute 9 you are fumbling for the remote, and about to stop the tape, when WAM! , the new nudity recharges the battery (as does the charge as it moves to another neuron) and you are good for another 10 minutes.

Determining the final score can be tricky. One suggestion is to add the three categories up, divide by 3, and then add 1 point for every nude scene over 3. Or, if you have seen the other two installments, you could get the guys together, pour a pinot noir, and compare and contrast the merits and plotline on your own. Whatever your method, Good Luck, and Happy Viewing!

5.0 out of 5 stars jaime pressly as sexy dominatrix...wow!, December 18, 1999
Gorgeous, sexy young blonde actress Jaime Pressly plays a dominatrix who takes revenge on her enemies by seducing and killing them. She uses all the tricks - chains, handcuffs, whips, to bring her men to submission and then strikes. Great sexy concept, like Basic INstinct or Body of Evidence. If the idea of an innocent-looking luscious girl tying up, torturing and killing helpless men turns you on, watch this movie!

4.0 out of 5 stars The Best "Poison Ivy" so far., November 7, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Poison Ivy - The New Seduction (DVD)
Clearly the the most erotic of the "Poison Ivy"movies. Jaime Pressly who plays Violet really takes the movie toanother level. Lets not forget Athena Massey who plays her mother who is also HOT. Megan Edwards played her role well as Joy but dose not show any skin, not that she needed to she was really sexy. The DVD has both the Unrated and R-rated versions and bot fullscreen and widescreen formats, It has no other options like commentary. Buy it if you are a fan of the "Poison Ivy" movies and if you want to see how HOT is Jaime Pressly.

(took off one start 'cuse there is no Commentary)
