Title: Poison Ivy
Author: Travis Vp Fox

APOOO Rating: 5
Amazon Rating: 5

Poison Ivy by Travis Vp Fox is the first published book of his many
urban psychological thrillers. Poison Ivy will leave you questioning
what you are reading, creating a desire to continue through this book
in hopes to understand the complexity of the character, "Ivy", with
all the twists and turns that take place in her life.

Mr. Fox has a way of successfully creating a story around the life of
one character, "Ivy". The reader travels with Ivy from the days of
a young child of five-years old into the days of developing into a
young woman. Along this journey of reading Poison Ivy, you will meet
a very complex personality, while engaging those characters that help
to shape the person Ivy is to become. Young Ivy developed a
relationship with God at a young age where she pleads for protection
and understanding of why He allows this abuse to happen to her and
all around her. You will hear the voices that live with Ivy,
struggling to know where the voices come from and who they are. What
is the fate of young Ivy? Is it a life of prostitution and drugs or
simply a life of survival? Ivy is a survivor, she is beautiful,
smart, strong and faced with so many questions and challenges. Who
are the players in her life and does she have anyone to save her?

Life can be so unfair...what choices do you make to survive? Mr. Fox's
writing style allows the reader to walk beside the character of "Ivy"
and to feel her every emotion, leaving the door open for you to do
some interpreting on your own. One thing you will take away from
reading this book is a sadness for this character, possibly with an
understanding of how the experiences of our young play a factor in
our society of whom they become as adults. Mr. Fox, with his
psychology background, desires to stress how we have "choices" in how
we maneuver though life, how we allow our experiences to determine
who we become and the factors that play a role on all of the above.

I highly recommend this book for those that love a challenge. This
book is a fast read, causing a desire to continue reading to the end.

Plunged deeply into the dark, seedy underworld of prostitution where anything goes and nothing matters, Ivy finds herself looking for love, self-worth, acceptance and a purpose in life. Some days she doesn't know if she is coming or going. Is there a light at the end of the tunnel for Ivy?

This is not a bad book and Fox can certainly tell a story, but I can't say this is a book I'd easily recommend to others. The subject matter is sensitive, the details graphic and the language aggressive. Poison Ivy is definitely for a mature audience and those not easily offended or disgusted. Harrowing depiction. The end effect, though, is a book you may find hard to read, but even harder to forget.

3.0 out of 5 stars A Hard Way to Exist, April 22, 2007
This review is from: Poison Ivy (Paperback)
Ivy Davidson lives with her parents in the Huntington Park of Philadelphia. To onlookers, it may appear that they have a very good life. However, that's the furthest thing from the truth.

Drowning in a sorrowful sea, Ivy was terrorized as early as age five. Frightened of losing God's love, Ivy's sick father used that in order to trick his baby girl out of her innocence.

Unable to feel love and happiness like others, Ivy's only comfort came via heroine. All Ivy ever wanted was love, to live, go to prom and graduate. Instead she was misled, misguided, assaulted, raped and hated.

Continuously defiled, poor little Ivy never really grew up and suffers with trying to pave a way out of nothing. Will there ever be a change in Ivy's circumstance, or is she destined to be a forsaken soul?

Poison Ivy is a very difficult book to read as it deals with molestation. Though I felt like Travis Vp Fox started the book with promise, he completely lost me. Although I was able to complete the book, I am left wondering if Ivy was a schizophrenic, who began to hallucinate, or if she had alter personalities. It's unclear about what was and wasn't real and how much time had honestly passed. While I didn't find Poison Ivy insufferable, I do see room for improvements.

4.0 out of 5 stars What in the world....?, December 20, 2006

I did like this book, as long as it stayed in the story. Near the end when Ivy/Eve/that other voice started talking; that, for me, is when it kinda lost me. Yeah, this book is EXTREMELY BRUTAL and EXPLICIT! Don't read this book thinking that everything turns out all right and that Ivy ends up smiling.

Anyway... once I got past the voices that took me on a roller coaster of... something... I was drawn into this story and would not let me go. I couldn't help but feel sorry for Ivy because her life was SO MESSED UP!! It's like she didn't even have a chance at life, love, or a childhood. Almost every man... EVERY MAN... in her life was some form of satan.

The ending was, well... something that you don't expect and very good. It's not a happy ending (BY FAR!!!) but I liked the way it ended. Very good book by a very talented author.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good look Travis, February 3, 2008
This review is from: Poison Ivy (Paperback)
This book does not consist of spinning rims, kingpins, or the bling. Its one of the few in the mainstream that goes against industry standards. Travis did not dumb it down. Please have a clear mind and patiences when reading this novel especially towards the end, you will be very amazed if you do. With that said:

Poison Ivy most definitely took me through an emotional rollercoaster, from start to finish. There was never a dull moment in this novel, you dont believe me!? Then see for yourself! "This book is not based around spinning rims, kingpins, or the luxury life." With so much pain this character goes through in the book, you will be questioning yourself is this possible? Travis did a phenomenal job, he went above and beyond...his writing style & perspective is awesom.

5.0 out of 5 stars I need more!!!, November 5, 2006
This review is from: Poison Ivy (Paperback)
I've read plenty of urban lit books, and Poison Ivy wasn't like anything I've ever come across... From page 1 I felt like I was Poison Ivy and I went through so many emotions with every page that I turned... A book has never made me feel like that before and I need more...

Travis Fox is a writer that I can't wait to see more from... He has definately proven himself to the world with Poison Ivy... The Black Poe has a style of his own that is going to be hard to compete with... He has changed the game forever, and I LOVE IT... Great work Travis!!!

4.0 out of 5 stars Not Your Ordinary Novel!!!!, November 2, 2006
This review is from: Poison Ivy (Paperback)
Ivy Davidson has had a tragic life. At the age of ten, she was forced to watch the brutal murder of her father. Five years later, Ivy is forced to make it on her own as a prostitute. She struggles through years of abuse and drug addiction. But Ivy just wants to be loved. She wants the kind of love that heals and protects her. She wants to have normal teen worries like what to wear to the prom instead of fighting off johns and drugs. Ivy has some tough life choices that she is too young to make on her own. Will she stand up and make better choices for her life or will she leave her life in the hands of someone else?

Poison Ivy is an extraordinary novel by Travis Fox. At first glance, this novel looks like the typical gritty urban lit story but that is not the case. This author does an excellent job of blending supernatural elements with an emotionally charged storyline. I really felt the tragedy in Ivy's life but I also saw the beauty that was trying to push from beneath the surface. Readers will need to pay close attention when reading this novel because everything is not what it appears to be. Poison Ivy is innovative and dynamic. Travis Fox has brought us a novel that is a breath of fresh air and a break from the ordinary.
