This review is from: The Poison Tree A Tale of Hindu Life in Bengal (Kindle Edition)
Here's a romance about a woman and a married man. There's a lot more to it than that, but I don't want to give anything away. The author was a native of India who wrote the book in Bengali, from which it was translated into English and published in 1884. The characters are all Indian- no British people at all. It's rather obvious that the book was translated from another language, but that gives a unique flavor to it that makes it interesting to read. The ending is easily predictable, but if you go for historical romances you should like this one.
