5.0 out of 5 stars Great Song! February 20, 2011
I came across this song when Taylor Swift tweeted about it. I watched and listened to the music video and it was great! The lyrics just hit you in the heart. It's a great song about the ups and downs of relationships. Just a bit of trivia here, both members are married, but not to each other. Here's what Joy Williams of the duo said about the song:

Poison & Wine is a musical snapshot about the dichotomy of love - that while it can be the thing that destroys you, it can also be the very same thing that beckons and builds you. JP and I are both married have been for several years now - and we got to talking one day about what a tug and pull our individual relationships can be. The longer you know someone - and the longer you allow someone to know you - the more the light and shadows inside each person become more vivid. This song was our attempt at being as brutally honest about the dangerous and beautiful process of knowing and being known. (-Joy Williams, The Civil Wars)

As I was searching through the free music offerings on Amazon, I came across this little number. If you like The Swell Season, you will like this song and eventually group. The song centers around the themes of a love/hate relationship. Very beautifully crafted with a singable and memorable chorus. Enjoy!

5.0 out of 5 stars Exceptional: December 13, 2011

I believe that I originally received this single as a free download. Since then, however, I have become hooked on the stunning sound of The Civil Wars. Their harmonies are exquisite and are unparalleled in the bluegrass/folk musical world today. The lyrics are honest and raw and passionate, full of truth and stunning realness. Musicality is high, with great skill shown both in their use of guitar and piano.

This song itself is beautiful and provides just a slight taste of the entire album -- Barton Hollow is a worthwhile purchase, and I would recommend it to anyone looking to broaden their musical library and listen to a different sound.

In short, "Poison and Wine" is just a foretaste of the exceptional quality and beauty to be found in the music of The Civil Wars.
