Judson's The Bone Orchard introduced narrator and reluctant part-time PI Declan "Mac" MacManus, a disheveled 30-something living from paycheck to paycheck in an above-bar apartment in a trendy Hamptons town. In this somber sequel of sorts, Mac gets caught in the middle of a brutal homicide, which leads to double-dealing, multiple murders and an unusual missing-persons case. At the center of the action is a prominent local family Mac once knew well. As the lines between past and present blur, Mac has to choose between saving a childhood friend and saving himself. Although Judson's cinematic prose and realistic dialogue create lush, vivid scenes, many of the events that take place here mirror those in his previous book. For example, Judson again portrays Mac and Augie, a former DEA agent and friend, as hostile strangers in the book's opening pages, and Augie's hot-for-Mac teenage daughter moves in with Mac after her father goes into hiding-a scenario played out in Judson's debut. Still, this taut thriller is far from predictable, and its dark and mysterious plot suits Judson's understated writing style.

Our toys may change, Judson seems to suggest, but human treachery, greed and violence remain constant. As do questions of how much we can ever really know anyone -- even or perhaps especially those we love.

Unsure of whom he can trust, a battered and drugged Remer ("pain behind his eye and... ringing in his ears") finds himself on the run, backed into a dark corner of his own. It's all handled deftly and with admirable restraint, making this dark little story all the more potent and memorable, and the chill of the final scenes, set against the finely painted backdrop of the cold, desolate off-season limbo of a resort town, will linger long after the final page is read. As a Manhattan private eye in 2003, Remer had to "peek through windows like a voyeur, hide in shadows." At least until the PI was caught and then "persuaded" to exit the business. It's amazing what a little --- make that much --- torture can do for a career change.

Fast forward to late '08. Remer now owns a liquor store in Southampton. At age 42, he has secrets, but it "isn't in his nature to give up his secrets." One of those is a special tattoo removed from his chest and new lust, if not love, Angela. "Her last name is Syc, pronounced sigh, as in, she likes to say, 'to breathe out softly.'" However, "Remer's affairs simply don't [last]." With Christmas at hand and equal-age Angela out of nursing school, why does he not stay with her for the holiday in Manhattan instead of her weekend overnights with him in Southampton?

Off-again, on-again cop and former Remer employee Kay Barton is now romantically involved with Tommy Miller, who "had been a private investigator for a number of years before retiring suddenly at the ripe old age of thirty." But was there romance between Barton and Remer? "It was Barton who suggested that Remer hire Mia [Ferrara] despite her lack of experience. A thirty-year-old woman who had never held a job in her life." Mia has now gone missing, and Barton persuades Remer to take on this special case, hooking up Remer with Mia's mega-wealthy mom, Evelyn. Remer is not sure if Evelyn is fully aware of his affair with Mia --- and the pain she caused. Is his motive for locating Mia an eye-popping annual-salary fee, or to rekindle the romance? With many bestselling crime novels, there is a money trail, and Remer follows this one like a bloodhound.

Avoiding Manhattan because of what happened there in '03, Remer is drawn back after two days of unconsciousness caused by a truncheon. Six stitches as a Christmas gift. Exposed to dubious characters in New York's Long Island villages called the Hamptons, Remer realizes that lie is the central part of believe, what he's asked to do by everyone he comes across. Curiously, each tale contradicts the last. The only thing Remer can believe is his own gut feelings.

Each seemingly innocent lead becomes a string connected to a complex web that increasingly looks as though it's being woven into a noose. Even a mildly hallucinogenic herbal blend can't ease Remer's misgivings about trying to locate Mia. When he does so, it's with a scene that made me think the author had imbibed Remer's "special" Long Island Iced Tea.

Third-person present tense puts readers in the midst of thrilling action. This noir suspense masterpiece is "as dark as a Bible," reading as easily as watching a blockbuster movie with a totally believable script. An astoundingly complex read made simple by explaining psychological motivations of key characters, VOYEUR will be one of my Top Ten For '10 picks."

The book opens with a struggling restaurateur, in the midst of a late-night refurbishing project, witnessing a gruesome double-murder on a nearby bridge. Others, one by one, are brought into the mix, including (but by no means limited to) Jake Bechet, an ex-boxer, now part owner of a cab company; Bobby Falchetti, Bechet's friend and employee, whose moral weaknesses have the potential to bring down not only himself but also those around him; and Tommy Miller, a retired private investigator turned reclusive landlord, who is haunted by the memory of the lover who abruptly left him years before.

It is the manner in which master chef Daniel Judson mixes his characters into this hard-boiled roux that makes THE WATER'S EDGE such a compelling, addicting read. If we are separated by only six degrees from everyone else, that distance is halved in Judson's Southampton. The victims of the murder are in the employ of Jorge Castello, a shady, seemingly omnipotent figure who has his fingers in pies both legal and illicit and is the reluctant former employer of Bechet.

Castello draws Bechet back into his orbit with a quietly roiling combination of threats and promises, for the purposes of determining who committed the murders and recovering some unnamed merchandise that Castello considers his own. He is certain that there is a traitor within his organization who is responsible for both the murders and the misappropriation of his goods; he figures, quite cannily, that the only way to get to the bottom of it is to go outside of his sphere of influence to Bechet, the one man who was able to walk away from him and make it stick.

Miller, meanwhile, is recruited by Southampton's chief of police to conduct his own investigation into the killings, as a pragmatic move: there are things he can do and places he can go that the police cannot. Both men are given 24 hours to get results. Their investigations take them to places in their past that they would rather not go: Bechet to his --- and his father's --- prior work for Castello, and Miller to his former love, who it seems was involved, in more ways than one, with one of the murder victims. Even as Miller's and Bechet's investigations each draw them slowly to the other, however, there are connections between them of which only one is aware and that must remain so if their lives, and those for whom they care, are to survive the day.

THE WATER'S EDGE is infused with dark, brilliant writing that focuses the mind and addicts the brain with its characterization and plotting. It is one of those novels that is so difficult to do well: take a number of individuals running around in a relatively small area, each with different pieces of the puzzle that the others need, and put a couple of them at crosscurrents with each other, until only the toughest and smartest is the one left standing. There are others who approach and match this level of East Coast noir --- Peter Blauner, Jason Starr, Wallace Stroby --- each of whom strikes a nerve and plays it like a finely tuned string. Judson, with THE WATER'S EDGE, cements his already secure place in the genre."

This was a book I COULD very gladly put down. There were just too many characters and I had to keep asking myself, "wait...which one is this guy again?" I just didn't think the plot was so great - it's just that the author added too many characters which is the only thing complicated about the plot.

And oh my gosh the amount of errors in this book are unbelievable! I've never read a book with so many mistakes. There were missing words, added words that made no sense in the sentence, misspellings like crazy. Was this book even edited? If so, fire the editor.

I found the plot to be about the same old sorry character who is a drunk, tough guy but really has a big heart. (Yawn) The story was depressing because of this guy's life. There were definitely twists and turns but I wasn't all that surprised by them.

Something that really bothered me and completely ruined the book for me were some of the gorey, gross-out details of violence that went way too far. I had to skip over some parts and the book left me with lingering gross pictures in my head that made me wish I hadn't read it at all.

I would definitely not recommend this book to anyone and won't read anything else by this author unless I decide I'd like to be depressed and physically repulsed.

This prequel/sequel to The Bone Orchard makes good on all the promise of that first book featuring Declan MacManus. In moody, lyrical prose, Judson takes us through Mac's boozy recollection of a bewildering night spent with a woman named Rose. A dreamlike interval, it is ultimately pivotal to this second outing for hard-drinking, vegetarian Mac and his friend, just as hard-drinking, retired DEA agent--the inimitably lovable Augie.
When the pair are asked to discourage a young man from seeing a certain unnamed young woman by the darkly omnipotent Frank Gannon, big wheel in small-town Southampton, all hell breaks loose. Murder and menace of every conceivable variety are central to a plot so confoundingly complex that it's impossible to predict a single moment of this beautifully executed, breakneck-paced novel. The writing is as lean and lonely as Mac himself--perfectly complimentary, something rarely achieved.
This book is a knock-out, dealing as it does with the ugly inner machinations of wealthy families and the fallout on the children, as well as on those who must come along to perform damage control. The barely-contained energy of the prose provides a driving narrative that doesn't let up for a moment. It is un-put-downable, gripping, and oddly rewarding.
Most highly recommended.

He lives in a quiet little Long Island town that is home to the rich and famous but booms during the summer season. There is a clear class division year round between the rich and the working stiffs like Declan MacManus, a man barely making ends meet, who is drunk more than he is sober. Frank Gannon, a powerful private detective in the area, hires Mac and pairs him up with Augie to deal with a man who promised to stay away from a girl but broke his word.

When they catch up with the young man, they witness him being killed by professional hitmen. They follow them but the professional thugs escape while Augie gets injured and Mac saves their lives. Augie becomes Mac's new friend and the two work on cases for Frank until they can get a line on the killers. Neither Mac nor Augie realize they are the fall guys in a serpentine plot orchestrated by one of the town's most prominent families and the chief of police.

There are so many twists and turns in the POISONED ROSE that the audience will feel obsessed to read it in one sitting; that is if they want to find out who is the manipulator and who is the manipulated. Mac is a man with many flaws and failings but when the chips are down he is a man a friend can count on. He is in essence of a hero in every sense of the word. Daniel Judson is an expert at writing novel crime thrillers.

The word novel comes from the Italian word novella, meaning "new kind of story". We've read mysteries. We've experienced the twists and turns of a good who-dunnit. We've met great characters throughout the years and lived vicariously through their experiences. But, when a plot twists so hard that the underbelly becomes, not only the explanation of previous events, but a whole new series of occurrences in itself, it truly does become a "new kind of story". The plots are hidden and reveal themselves like a set of Russian nesting dolls. As one layer is cracked open and pulled apart, the underlying story is revealed to be an entirely new undertaking. A novel within a novel.

Daniel Judsons's characters are so lifelike that your mind's eye has no issue creating a face, a build, and demeanor for them. Being a first-person-narrative through the eyes of Declan "Mac" MacManus, you experience the internal tug-of-war of raw emotions that Mac must wade through on a daily basis. You start to unconsciously feel the physical pain. You can hear the bones breaking, the gun shots echoing, and the thud of footsteps behind you. The words on the pages disappear and you become an invisible bystander, witnessing the events as they unfold.

I will not attempt plot and story descriptions, as I do not feel that I can do Judson's writing any justice by writing about it myself. The stories are better experienced first-hand without warning or preconceived expectations. Each installment is so well-crafted that they are strong enough to stand alone, but the thrill of tying them all together will allow the reader to experience the whole picture as it was meant to be read. If there was a clinical illness of page-turning addiction, the first few pages of this trilogy will be the gateway-drug to a dark, ever-widening spiral of what every mystery novel should be gauged against. Give your imagination the gift of stimulation. The Gin Palace Trilogy is what you have been missing.
