Grade 3-6-- Full-color photographs of some of the world's most toxic creatures will amuse and fascinate fans of the gory and creepy. Three sections concentrate on how poison or venom is disseminated--by biting, stinging, or by touching--accompanied by photographs and descriptions of creatures fitting that category. The pictures are generally of good quality, although some are dark. The text is clear and descriptive. Good complementary titles are Killer Fish (Holiday, 1982) by Russell Freedman and Poisonous Snakes (Watts, 1987) by Colin McCarthy, both of which give greater detail about snakes. Amazing Poisonous Animals (Knopf, 1991) by Alexandra Parsons has excellent photographs and diagrams, as well as intriguing trivia.
