Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal

Turkington, co-author of the Encyclopedia of Deafness and Hearing Disorders ( LJ 2/15/92) , provides descriptions, symptoms, and treatments for over 600 potential poisons. Since most reference books on poisons cover substances from only one type of source, such as poisonous plants, it is convenient to have poisons from such possible toxic agents as plants, animals, drugs, household cleansers, and other chemicals covered in one concise volume. However, while Turkington's descriptions of the poisons and symptoms are informative, most of the suggested treatments could only be provided by a healthcare professional. In addition, while the introduction states that the "information for the book comes from the most up-to-date sources available," several of the references listed at the end of the book have more updated editions. Recommended only for public or academic libraries that do not already have adequate resources in this area.

From Booklist

"Designed as a guide and reference to a wide range of poisons and antidotes, and to additional information and addresses of consumer products and toxicological groups," this book contains clear definitions for the layperson. The alphabetically arranged entries cover the range of common toxic and poisonous substances--drugs, chemicals, plants, and animals--and include trade names for generic drugs, street names for recreational drugs, and common and Latin names for plants and animals. For each substance is provided a description of its actions, symptoms, and treatment. Many entries include interesting facts, such as how Indians gather poison from arrow-poison frogs. The treatment, in most cases, is stated in general medical terms that may be too technical for the layperson and too simple for medical personnel (e.g., "gastric lavage should be performed"). The book is not designed to be used as a first aid manual; its purpose is to help avoid poisoning. For example, the seven-page entry Food Poisoning details bacterial and viral causes, contaminated fish, and other causes and gives guidelines for safe food storage. The entry Bee Stings includes advice on how to avoid provoking attack and what to do if it occurs.

Most entries are one-half page or less. There are no illustrations. Seventeen charts treat such topics as amounts of caffeine in common products, mushroom toxicity, etc. Guidelines are provided on the information a caller should be able to provide to a poison control center. Eight appendixes list home testing kits for toxic substances, hotlines (including the National Animal Poison Control Center), newsletters, organizations and appropriate government agencies, poison-education and information materials (mainly pamphlets and brochures), poisons by symptom, regional poison-control centers, and toxicity ratings of poisons.

Suitable for public and college libraries. --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Poisons and Antidotes Sourcebook, December 21, 2008
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: The Poisons and Antidotes Sourcebook (Facts for Life) (Paperback)
This book is a very complete guide to poisons. What they are, what part is the most dangerous, who it effects(adults, kids, animals),where it is located
geographicly, how it acts, and how its cured,if it can be cured. I have studied herbs for about 20 years and this is the information I have been trying to find under herbal headings, and couldn't. This book lets you know
the poisons you play with every day around your home( and don't know it.)
You will think twice about everything you do, and you should.

This review is from: The Poisons and Antidotes Sourcebook (Facts for Life) (Paperback)
I have many books on this subject
and this is exactly what i was looking for when i typed the word poisons in the search engine it is neither too scientific nor too simple "the best book on the subject" If this book doesn't live up to your expectations i do not believe there is another book that can give you more info on so many poisons.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great short encycleopedia of poisons and antidotes, June 13, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
Written in laymen terms this is a useful book for defining terms. You won't find any biochemistry here, which is great if you want a short answer but bad if you would like to know the chemistry --- how does a particular poison attack?
Herbes are identified by name but not by any manner by which they could be identified in nature.

Antidotes, what few exist, are identified but again, in words only. The biochemistry is again missing.
