At long last... Mewtwo is BACK!,
By "teamrocketrose" (Viridian City) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Pokemon - Mewtwo Returns (DVD)
I had seen this in Japanese (although in a horrible-quality print) but I knew this would be amazing. And guess what? The dubbers didn't ruin this one! Not only that, but the extra feature, the UNCUT story of Mewtwo's Origin is well worth the price of the DVD by itself! Having heard all about the mysterious Japanese CD Drama, "Birth of Mewtwo", which explains the creation of everyone's favorite angsty, psychic cat, it was truly spectacular to actually see this in animation. That in itself explains more about the character of Mewtwo than the entire first movie! The main story of Mewtwo Returns focuses on Giovanni, a character who never gets enough screen time, and one of his star agents, Domino AKA "The Black Tulip", agent 009. And she's perfectly detestable! Like in the previous Pokemon movies, our favorite Rockets (Jessie, James, and Meowth) play a heroic role (and get lots of screen time, might I add!). The animation is spectacular, like the other Pokemon movies, and even though the story is somewhat shorter, you don't even notice. In a way, it's better, since the story moves quickly without any filler. I recommend this to any Pokemon fan, but especially the older fans out there. This is a bit more intense than the TV show (like the other movies were) but I think it's much better than the first 2 movies. If you ever liked Mewtwo at all, or wondered what happened after the first movie, you HAVE to see this!

Mewtwo Returns?! About TIME he came back!!,
A Kid's Review
This review is from: Pokemon - Mewtwo Returns (DVD)
I absolutely LOVE this movie. It's really good, and even though the sidetrack was recycled from the first movie, it still really fit the situations.
In the plot of this movie, Giovanni, the evil deranged head of Team Rocket, locates Mewtwo, whom he had cloned from the DNA of the legendary Pokemon Mew. Mewtwo is living in a secluded canyon in Johto with his super-cloned Pokemon, so Giovanni decides to go there and make Mewtwo's life miserable. As fate would have it, however, Ash and the other good guys--and, inevitably, Team Rocket--are going there at the same time. At some point, Jessie, James and Meowth of course try to steal Pikachu, but the scheme goes awry, and Meowth and Pikachu decide to help out Mewtwo, alongside their clones. (I like it when Team Rocket helps out.) For some reason, many people seem to have major beefs with Mewtwo Returns, but then again, in most cases these are the same people who complain about any anime that is dubbed into English. If you like Pokemon, if you like Mewtwo, and if you liked the first movie, you have absolutely GOT to get this one. I've memorized the whole thing now because I like it so much. ^_^

Ah, Myuutsuu sama ^_^ It's good to see him back in action again, for alot of people were dying to know what happened to him after the First Movie. I have seen the Japanese dub to this, and I know not to expect the same for the American version but hey I am excited about this as any hard core Mewtwo fan is ^_^Basically the plot goes that Mewtwo is spotted by Team Rocket living on an island that seems to produce a type a magical relivitalizing water. Of course Ash and Co. stumble across a lady studying the water and thus get caught up with Mewtwo (again.) But Mewtwo has long since changed his ways, and discusses the beauty of the world with his devoted clones, to which you may remember, of Pikachu and Meowth. Of course Giovanni wants his bought and paid for all powerful clone back, and sets about sending a whole air armarda after Mewtwo and his clones. What happens to them all, hey ya gonna hafta buy it ^_^ But when in Pokemon is there not a happy ending? ^_~ Myuutsuu no Aijo

My favorite of the Pokemon movies.,

This review is from: Pokemon - Mewtwo Returns (DVD)
Even though Suicune is a favorite pokemon of mine, 'Pokemon 4ever' just wasn't quite good enough overall to be my favorite movie. The third film contained a memorable song by Innosense, but again, one song wasn't enough. And Pokemon 2000 included some good Team Rocket content. But the best pokemon movie, in my opinion, is 'Mewtwo Returns.' The story is still rather basic, with Giovanni being the main villain and Ash & company being the heroes, along with Mewtwo and all the other pokemon, genetically enhanced clones or not. Yet there are some very poignant messages brought forth by the movie, and the animation is quite nice, not appearing to have been tossed together quickly without care. This movie might have been a direct-to-video job, but it was a great one.
Ash finds himself worried that a source of miraculous water with healing powers will be discovered and ruined. Mewtwo struggles to resist capture and having his spirit broken by the ruthless Team Rocket leader Giovanni. And the rifts between cloned pokemon and 'normal' ones are explored and eventually smoothed over. What makes this movie most enjoyable for me is the introduction (and sadly, the first and only meeting) of a new Team Rocket agent, young Domino, aka the Black Tulip, agent 009. Multi-faceted and brilliant as Cassidy, whom she slightly resembles (blonde with violet eyes), Domino is a character who adds interest and fun to the film. She seems like a perfect little Swiss girl (with that swirly blonde hair, clothes that match the colors of the Swiss flag, & a convincing portrayal of a hiker, the way she looks like she could be in a lodge wearing a green L.L.Bean sweater...not to mention that we don't know her real name. Domino suggests Dominique, which is French & thus potentially associated with Switzerland). But she turns out to be one slick Rocket agent with mad fighting skills. I would go with 'Mewtwo Returns' if I had to pick one pokemon movie to see. You still need to be a pokefan to enjoy it, but it's the most well-done.

English dub of "Myuutsuu! Ware wa kokoni ari!",
By
This review is from: Pokemon - Mewtwo Returns (DVD)
As already noted, this is the English dub of "Myuutsuu! Ware wa kokoni ari!" which in Japan was a special program of Pocket Monsters. I have the Japanese DVD of the special and it's very good, the voice acting, the animation, the music, everything. I sincerely hope that 4Kids doesn't mess up this really great saga. The first few minutes of the DVD recap the events from Myuutsuu no Gyakushuu (Mewtwo Strikes Back) and then starts with Domino (a new Roketto-dan member) explaining to Sakaki (Giovanni), Roketto-dan's (Team Rocket's) leader, about the whereabouts of the Pokemon that he has tried for so long to regain control over, Myuutsuu (Mewtwo).Myuutsuu is on an island in a lake on top of a plateau raised higher than the rest of the ground along with his clones. At the beginning of the story Satoshi, Kasumi, and Takeshi (Ash, Misty, and Brock) meet up with a lady and then with another young lady and a man. Musashi, Kojirou, and Nyaasu (Jesse, James, and Meowth) then steal Pikachuu. The ensuing chase leads them to be in Roketto-dan's balloon above the plateau where they eventually get to after crashing into the water. Sakaki comes and threatens to hurt Myuutsuu's clones if Myuutsuu doesn't return to Roketto-dan. Sakaki's black mail plan works and Myuutsuu walks into Sakaki's containment field. Will Satoshi be able to save Myuutsuu!? Will the sacred spring producing the special water in the plateau be saved from the corruption of Roketto-dan?! Is Sakaki Satoshi's father? Well, I'll give you the answer to that, which is no. I don't know who spread that rumor but if Sakaki was Satoshi's father, then I THINK that either Satoshi would have recognized Sakaki or Sakaki would have remembered Satoshi. But to find out the answers to the other questions, you'll have to see the show to find out!

Mewtwo's Return- Review,
By Demonic Kelvin "Dark" (Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Pokemon - Mewtwo Returns [VHS] (VHS Tape)
Personally, I think this is a great movie and not to be missed. Especially, if you have already watched Pokemon-The First Movie. I like this movie because it han a very interesting story line continuing from the previous movie. Mewtwo from the first movie is so cruel, mean and has no sympathetic feeling. But, in this movie, his inner feelings is very appealing. The whole story was about Mewtwo's dilemma regarding on his and his cloned pokemon origin and where they should belong. The part where he willing to rescue humans(in the bus) really touched me cause he was totally different from the previous movie. His act of struggling to protect his own cloned pokemon from Team Rocket's boss really touched me. The part where he stopped the cloned Pikachu from battling Ash's Pikachu fascinated me cause he's the one starting all the battles in the first movie. The most interesting part is the ending. Mewtwo's act of releasing all his cloned pokemon for them to seek freedom rather than keeping them with him nearly made me cry. The whole movie is very, very good! Beside that, the soundtracks in the movie are also very nice. So, those who have watched 'The First Movie' must watch this one as well.

Direct to video excellence,

This review is from: Pokemon - Mewtwo Returns (DVD)
Mewtwo Returns is a very good movie that surprised me more than I expected. The idea is that Mewtwo is basically living his life with the clones in peace. Meanwhile Ash and the gang (who don't remember the origional encounter with MEwtwo) accidently stumble upon his lair after Team Rocket captures Pikachu again. Meanwhile Teamrocket leader Giovanni has discovered Mewtwo lair and wants to capture him once again. Mewtwo is currently in a Moral dilema because on the one hand he wants to battle Giovanni, but he also has grown to care about the clones. Eventually with the help of Ash he battles Giovanni and begins to understand himself.MEwtwo Returns is another reason why the Pokemon Movies should not be overlooked. In fact I believe that it should of been in theaters instead of the third movie. However it went direct to video and was overlooked. So it should definetly be looked into. It is definetly a good watch.

Mewtwo Returns - As well as some old foes,
By Daniel Rushton (Kent, United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Pokemon - Mewtwo Returns (DVD)
As the title suggests, this is basically the sequel to the first Pokémon movie "Mewtwo Strikes Back". In this feature length episode the Team Rocket Boss, Giovanni, discovers where Mewtwo now lives after leaving New Island at the end of the first movie. And, as you would expect, it's not long before the island on which Mewtwo is now living is swarming with Team Rocket members, trying to catch it and the other Pokémon clones. This is a great episode, especially if you're a Team Rocket or a Mewtwo fan. But even if you're not, this is still a great continuation of the Mewtwo Saga.

Mewtwo's Back For More!,

Ash, Misty, and Brock try, but fail, to catch up with a bus to get pass Mt. Kana, a very dangerous mountain to climb. Luna, a pokemon researcher, invites them to stay at a cabin until the next bus comes. During the night, another pokemon researcher comes (sorry, I forgot his name) with a teen that goes by the name Domino. Team Rocket comes later and steals Pikachu (again) and makes their get-away in their improved balloon. They go flying up Mt. Kana and go out of control due to another storm. Ash and co. climb up the mountain to retrive Pikachu. On the way up, the rope that was hanging on to everyone crash into Team Rocket's balloon and go sailing up and into Mt. Kana. Domino later reviels her true identity as Agent 009. Meanwhile, there is a island on top of Mt. Kana and on that island is Mewtwo and the clones. Mewtwo is VERY different compared to the first movie. Unlike its usual distroy all the humans personality, it wants to be left alone with the clones on the island and live is peace. Domino spots Mewtwo on the island and informs Giovanni were Mewtwo is. Giovanni wants to capture Mewtwo again and try to take over the world again! The balloon later crashes onto the island. The pikachu clone wants to go and live were it wants, not stuck on the island, so it leads some clones and pikachu and meowth across the lake. Giovanni tries to capture the clones but is later stopped by Mewtwo. Giovanni blackmails Mewtwo by saying that if it fights his machines, he will kill the clones. Mewtwo, not wanting the clones hurt, gives itself up by walking into a force feild so it can't get away. Giovanni, wanting Mewtwo to work for him again, makes the machines hurt Mewtwo. He said that he will stop the pain if Mewtwo obays him. Mewtwo said it much rather be dead than work for him. So Mewtwo is stuck in the force feild. Ash and co. are later locked up by Team Rocket (not Jessie and James) with the clones. They later get out and run into Mewtwo in the machine. They try to get Mewtwo out, but can't stop the machines. Mewtwo then overruns the mashine with its physic powers, but at the same time hurts itself even more. The machine explodes and Mewtwo is so weak from the machine that it can barly stand up. The water on the island can heal pokemon that are hurt, and Ash and co. decide to take Mewtwo to the water, but are stop by Giovanni. Misty and Brock holds off Team Rocket while Ash takes Mewtwo to the water. (the pokemon researchers are testing the water to make sure it's not comtaminated) Ash makes it to the water but the researchers say if Mewtwo gets into the water, the water will be comtaminated. Ash, who cares more about Mewtwo than the water, throws Mewtwo into the water anyways. Giovanni comes and demands to know were Mewtwo is and tries to distroy the spring. Mewtwo flies out of the water that healed it and gets all ticked off and uses its powers to defend the water and move it to a different spot. It moved the water and erases Giovanni's memory and thanks Ash and co. for their help. Happy ending! Yay! This was an awsome movie! If you are a pokemon fan you MUST GET THIS MOVIE! It's better than any other pokemon movie.

Not your usual cute Pokemon movie!,
This review is from: Pokemon - Mewtwo Returns (DVD)
Those of you who've read thru my review pages and then hit this may be confused...but yes, Pokemon (both the anime and the game) is one of my guilty pleasures. However, I don't feel the least bit guilty over owning a copy of this! It's not like the previous ones, and certainly not like the TV anime. It's a very dark ride through parts of the Pokemon world that've only been hinted at in places, or have appeared only in certain manga versions. There are a lot of deep philosophical points here, hence a lot of talking and not so much action. But that's not a bad thing, given what's being ruminated over...namely, Mewtwo's fractured relationship with the world he now has to live in. But to make things even more fractured, along comes Team Rocket. No, not the twits with the bad hair from the anime, but the REAL Team Rocket, being just as horrible as anyone who's read the "Pokemon Adventures" manga will know, led by Giovanni...and this is the first time we've really had to deal with Giovanni on any major basis, come to think of it. What results is Giovanni's attempt to reclaim his 'property'...namely Mewtwo himself...and a battle of wills between him and Mewtwo as to who and what will prevail. For little kids, I'd have to say that this would be a rough ride. There are parts that will possibly traumatize young children due to their intensity. But for everyone else...and ESPECIALLY anyone who's hoped that the anime would turn in a deeper direction...this is what you've been waiting for. And even moreso, this comes to the US shores with what appears to have been minimal tampering by 4Kids, unlike past movies. A few glitches, though...there are a couple of points where the origin of this 'movie' as a TV special do show as some odd editing screwiness. And the scripting, also likely due to this, exhibits some odd discontinuities. But these things are more technical points; they don't really detract from what's here. So I'll actually give the film 4 1/2 stars due to the glitches...but give that 1/2 back due to the fact that the DVD also contains...yep...the missing 9 or so minutes that're the REAL intro to "Mewtwo Strikes Back", the footage that changes the entire context of that movie, making this movie make a whole lot more sense. So...less action, more depth, loads of philosophical stuff slung around, really nasty Team Rocket, very likeable and sympathetic Mewtwo...yeah, this is something that anyone into Pokemon will definitely want. Just keep in mind...it's gonna be _really different_! |
