4.0 out of 5 stars Poke'mon:Pikachu's vacation
I've read the book and have seen the movie on several occasions(I have a 5 and 8 year old). I do not see any drug references or "'shrooms' in the movie or notice any references in the book. It was a highly colored, low cost anime from Japan aimed at little kids. The book and movie are to show how co-operation can be better than fighting and how destructive...

1.0 out of 5 stars Parents: Protect your Children
Having made the mistake of showing this film to my 5 year old, I thought I would drop a quick caution to parents. Most of the Pokemon material available is completely safe; this film is not. It is obviously aimed at the drug-culture. I don't know if the creators of Pokemon were trying to integrate older children into the cartoon with this one, but the fact remains that...

I've read the book and have seen the movie on several occasions(I have a 5 and 8 year old). I do not see any drug references or "'shrooms' in the movie or notice any references in the book. It was a highly colored, low cost anime from Japan aimed at little kids. The book and movie are to show how co-operation can be better than fighting and how destructive fighting can be. After reading the book, my kids and many of their friends have actually decided that (sometimes) co-operation is best. It's simplistic and may not be put in a way most adults would like, but just remember what you liked as a kid and how you drove your parents crazy and you'll enjoy it-in other words, don't grow up.

4.0 out of 5 stars This book is great for the younger ones., December 24, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Pokemon Movie #01: Pikachu's Vacation (jr. Novel) (Paperback)
Pikachu's Vacation in the book was very interesting. But, it's much better for the younger ones. This book was good. But like always, the authors always leave out some part of the real movie. I've noticed that in a lot of books that also had a movie. The same thing happened for Mewtwo Strikes Back, the book missed out a few parts that happened from the movie. Also included color pictures from the movie in the middle of the book. As I said before, this book is much better with the younger ones. It would definitely make a great gift. But the older ones would be a little old for this book.

This review is from: Pokemon Movie #01: Pikachu's Vacation (jr. Novel) (Paperback)
This book it's very good, ignore all what they say about the drugs, you know, i have seen it many times, and i dno't ee nothing bad on it, and that nonsense about the clouds, well in every film we see clouds on every forms, even in the REAL sky, it's a very good book, but way too short, and almost nothing but details, but it's very good, but i recommend you to read "The Art of pokemon the movie".

I DID think this movie was slightly lame, but it had NOTHING to do with hippie drug lords. It was really anoying when they tried to cheer togepi up! What I am tying to say is... THIS BOOK HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH DRUGS! THIS BOOK WAS GREAT FOR LITTLE KIDS. I WATCHED THIS MOVIE BEFORE AND I DIDN'T SEE A SO CALLED BONG OR THE 'SHROOM' CLOUDS! but, I will go now. don't believe the people about the hippie druglords thing. IT IS NOT TRUE!

It is obviously aimed at the drug-culture. I don't know if the creators of Pokemon were trying to integrate older children into the cartoon with this one, but the fact remains that there are subtle allusions to "tripping" throughout this film. The scene transitions had a sort of pulsing tie-dyed pattern that left me feeling ill, and there is one scene in which part of the foliage is obviously drawn to resemble one of those "pipe and bong" devices you used to see during the 60s. Avoid this movie.

2.0 out of 5 stars Hippie drug lords? I'd have to agree..., January 24, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Pokemon Movie #01: Pikachu's Vacation (jr. Novel) (Paperback)
I went to see the Pokemon Movie, and during the Pikachu's Vacation short, I've A.) Almost lost my lunch. B.) Got dizzy and a serious headache. C.) All of the above. The correct answer? C. All of the above. My little cousins haven't even seen the movie. (I got the Japanese version of Mewtwo Strikes Back for them to see. Less of an acid trip.) I've even seen the "Shroom clouds", but I didn't catch the bong. The scene transitions gave me headaches, and almost made me sick. The plot... was there a plot? I don't know. I didn't catch it. Maybe that's because I was too "high" off the movie. It was funny, yes. Some parts. The rest was like watching a funky merged version of "Yellow Submarine" and "Pokemon". I was in a complete daze. The colours, swirling, whirling, spinning and morphing into cute little chew toys that try in vain to pull poor Lizardon(Charizard)'s head out of a drain pipe. Fantasia on crack was it? I think so. Definetly. if you don't want your kids to be on hallucenogens(sp?), beware. Beware Pikachu's Vacation. Beware Pikachu period. That little rat is nothing but trouble.

1.0 out of 5 stars Underlying drug themes too complex for little kids..., December 14, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Pokemon Movie #01: Pikachu's Vacation (jr. Novel) (Paperback)
At first this story seems to be a harmless romp around a Pokemon vacation island. The Pokemon help out one of their Pokemon friends who has his head stuck in a drainpipe. But that's not what it's really about. No folks, this isn't child-friendly Sesame street type entertainment. This story is actually brought to you by the letters L - S - D!

Pikachu's Vacation features melting realities, bizzare character transformations and hypnotic scenes of Pokemon dancing against the all-too-familiar Tie-Dye colored psychedelic backgrounds espoused by the Hippie drug lords. Soon the familiar Pokemon plot is lost altogether, and reality disolves into seemingly unconnected sequences that resemble Fantasia on crack. There are even subtle drug references in the pictures - in one scene a bong is hidden in the grass, in another the clouds in the sky all resemble mushrooms.

This book is NOT recommended for little kids! On the other hand, parents might want to order this book to see for themselves what the makers of Pokemon are tacitly supporting.
