Editorial Reviews

From the Publisher

We Are pleased to release the 1st edition of the POKEMON PLAYERS POCKET GUIDE in response to the overwhelming demand for a single source for card translations, collecting information and playing strategy. From the Author

(Q) Hello Ryan. What led you to write about Pokmon card collecting and gaming? (A) Well, it all started because my Father and I are avid collectors of sports cards and other sports related items. We were in Atlanta for the Sports-cards National Convention and I had some Pokmon cards set up on the table since I enjoy playing the game. On the second day I met David Mouser, the publisher of this magazine, and he started to quiz me about the game, my knowledge of it and so forth, and he seemed impressed enough with what I knew to offer me a job on his staff.

(Q) Tell me about your experiences playing in Pokmon tournaments. (A) Well, I have been playing in tourneys in my area since they started around 4 months ago. It's always a blast as I get to see crazy new deck ideas work or not work, and being one of the older players in my area the younger players look to me for advice. It also helps that I haven't lost yet.

(Q) What would you say makes you a good Pokmon tournament player? (A) I started playing Magic a long long time ago while I was still in Middle School, and I think that has a lot to do with my playing abilities. Pokemon is just a simplified version of Magic and by converting some of the gameplay from Magic, I was able to become a good player.

(Q) What's your favorite deck, or do you have any secrets for winning deck construction? (A) You'll have to buy the book . Our forums on our website also offer a variety of different opinions on the subject.

(Q) I understand that Pocket Guide Publishing is sponsoring a series of tournaments. What will these be like? (A) I'm hoping that we will hold tournaments that will get players of all ages to come out and participate in a chance to be in the World Championship Tournament. This is really a good chance for people to get together to meet fellow Pokmon players and to trade with them.

1.0 out of 5 stars a comedy of errors, October 6, 2000
This review is from: Pokemon Player Pocket Guide (Mass Market Paperback)
This guide was a severe disappointment. I realized when I bought it that it only included pictures of the holographic cards, but I did not learn until it was too late that this is really not enough. The authors apparently decided that pictures of all the cards would not be needed, since they included the names and levels of the pokemon. However, they forgot that the game also includes TRAINER cards. They give translations of these cards, but the translations just aren't enough to identify these cards because the names can have little or no connection to the pictures. More recent editions of this guide do include pictures of the Trainer cards, but they do not correct the many typographical errors found in the original guide. While some of these are innocent, such as the wrong symbol to tell what type of pokemon is on the card, many translations leave off crucial second attacks or pokemon powers. Some cards are not even in this guide, even though the guide claims to have translations of the entire expansion of which that card is a part. I would not recommend this guide or any of the later editions of this guide I have seen to anyone. I feel that a translation guide has absolutely no value if it has almost as many errors as pages.
