Gameplay
Capture wild Pokémon and create a team to clear obstacles and solve puzzles encountered along the way. After players use a Pokémon's ability, it will leave the player's team; however, you will have a Partner Pokémon that will always stay by your side. As you progress through Missions and Quests, your Capture Styler becomes more powerful, giving your Styler more Energy and eventually advancing you to the level of Top Ranger.

Characters
Harness the power of hundreds of different Pokémon. In addition, players can choose to be a boy or girl Pokémon Ranger.

Key Game Features

  • Pokémon Ranger is a unique action-adventure series that features a fun, different way to capture Pokémon with the Nintendo DS stylus, which controls an item called the Capture Styler in the game. Players circle the Pokémon they want to catch by drawing circles around them on the touch screen. When you complete certain Quests, the Ranger Union awards you with power-ups, which add new upgrades and functions to your Capture Styler, allowing you to advance as you work to eventually become a Top Ranger (the most revered Ranger of all).
  • Now you can partner with a variety of different Pokémon of each type to complete Missions-giving you many options on how to approach different challenges. Every Pokémon is different, and capturing a Pokémon allows you to use its abilities to overcome various obstacles and challenges you will face along the way. The job of a Pokémon Ranger is never done: your duties will include fighting wildfires, rescuing people or even delivering an important package.
  • Your journey to become a Top Ranger takes you to the new region of Almia. This game has a larger world, more Missions, more adventure and more to do than the previous Pokémon Ranger games. It has a storyline full of adventure and the ability to travel to and explore many exciting new areas in Almia, including oceans, forests, deserts and more with the help of your Partner Pokémon.
  • This is the first game in the Pokémon Ranger series to feature Pokémon from Pokémon Diamond and Pokémon Pearl.
Special Powers, Weapons, Moves & Features
Use the Capture Styler to capture wild Pokémon. Once they are captured, wild Pokémon will follow the player around until their powers are used (either in a Poké Assist or a Field Move).

  • A Poké Assist is when the player uses an already captured Pokémon to help capture another wild Pokémon.
  • A Field Move is when the player uses a captured Pokémon's power to clear an obstacle that blocks his way or perform any another helpful function with it.

Fun: 5.0 out of 5 stars
I am currently playing Pokemon Ranger: shadows of almia, and it is so different from the first. The missions which in the first lacked somewhat, are a lot harder. You also have Quests, which are things you are asked to do by villagers. When you first start out in the game you are a student at a Ranger school, where you learn how to play the game. After graduating you are sent to your home in chicole town. But you are a ranger in Veil town, which is nextdoor. So home is always close by. Another new feature is the fact you can have more then one pokemon partner. You get these by doing Quests. When you complete quests you get new stuff for your ranger styler. To get higher rank is alot harder as well, but that makes the game more fun. You have new bad guys in the game, and are very challenging. The fun ascpet of the first game is still there along with the awesome character artowrk and personalities. I highly recomend this game to any poke fan!

5.0 out of 5 stars Better than expected November 15, 2008
Fun: 5.0 out of 5 stars
Shadows of almia is a LOT better than the first one. The story mode walks you more clearer through the game. The first one was a little scrambled but this one is a lot more clearer. I'm still currently playing and cant seem to put it down.. Can't wait to get further into the game and see what more unfolds! Also can't wait to get the special quests done!

5.0 out of 5 stars Superb fun for all November 23, 2008
Fun: 5.0 out of 5 stars
I haven't had so much fun with pokemon in a long time. Much better than the first one. Lots more interesting. Never a dull moment from mission to the quests. If your new to Pokemon Ranger Series, this one is by the far the best and most enjoyable. Hint, Hint a strategy guide helps!
I recommend it for all ages.
enjoy

5.0 out of 5 stars Fun But Underappreciated Pokemon Game December 16, 2008
A Kid's Review
Fun: 5.0 out of 5 stars
This game is a sequel to Pokemon RAnger which was very good and you should get. IN this game lots of pokemon from the Sinnoh Reigon show up for you to "capture". To capture pokemon you loop around them with your stylus or "styler" in the game and use poke power ups. There is a great story line with a cool, but predictable twist at the endgame. This game is really worth it, but I wish I could have found out more about the game from the blurb on the back of the box. Anyway, this is an awesome game I reccomend for all people who are about 8 to 12 years old (like me)!

4.0 out of 5 stars Very Fun June 21, 2009
By T. Lin
Compared to basically most of all the other pokemon games, this is definitely something out of the routine. And I really like that.
With the missions and quests that you get, it's just sort of something new every time~ and it's great being able to see the pokemon before you have to battle it, that way you can avoid them (the slower ones anyway) and not have to spend time fighting or running away when you don't want to do that in the first place.

I just really enjoy this game, but I warn! If you don't have something protecting your touch screen, you really should get it, because doing all the "capturing" will seriously wear out your screen faster.
I've been playing the game for a few days now, and my protection seal already has a lot of circular scratches on it hahah. That is the only downside of this I see.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fun! February 12, 2009

Fun: 5.0 out of 5 stars
I thought that this game was awesome! I don't really have many ds games, but this is my favorite. You start out in a little "Ranger School" and learn how to play the game. You meet friends and learn what's in store for you. When you complete "Ranger School", you start as a real ranger based in "Vientown", a little bit away from "Chicole Village", where your family lives.

You complete various tasks, some called Missions and some called Quests. Missions are assaigned to you by more experienced rangers, and they usually take some time to complete. Quests are assaigned to you by townspeople and usually are very quick. Quests give you little boosts which help you later on, and Missions give you big boosts that help you immediately.

In the game, you have what's called a styler. It's what stores all of your information and helps you to capture pokemon. You are allowed a partner pokemon, which is a little pokemon who follows you around and is like your best friend, kind of like pikachu in the show. You are also allowed some friend pokemon, which can help you by 'poke assists', which help you when capturing other pokemon; 'field moves', which help you to clear objects off the path; and some pokemon can help you move around.

You draw loops around the pokemon you're capturing to make them like you better, but you have to watch out for their attacks. Some pokemon are really easy to capture, and some are very difficult. If the pokemon you are attemping to capture attacks you, it drains points off your styler. This is a problem because when your styler runs out of energy, the game is over. However, certain pokemon's 'field moves' and 'poke assists' can reacharge your styler, and in every town there is a "Ranger Base" where you can save and recharge your style.

5.0 out of 5 stars Vastly improved sequel. January 21, 2009
Amazon Verified Purchase
Fun: 5.0 out of 5 stars
Pokemon Ranger: Shadows of Almia is a vast improvement on the original Pokemon Ranger game. Any complaints from the first game are fixed here. From having more choices of Partner Pokemon instead of just being stuck with one to being able to lift the stylus off the screen while doing a capture without having to start over, these are just the tip of the iceberg with this game. I highly recommend it for fans of the original game and for Pokemon fans in general for the downloadable missions that, after completion, transfer special Pokemon to the Diamond and Pearl editions.

Yes, this is the NEW Pokemon Ranger, part 2 you could say. It's pretty new, it came out this November. I haven't played it yet, but it looks just like the first one, so if he liked that one, chances are he'll enjoy this. Good luck!
