5.0 out of 5 stars A child's fable about coming out
This is a great little book that introduces Squirtle's problem with "coming out" -- a metaphor for the closet that many gay and lesbian people find themselves in due to societal pressure. Unable to play with the other boy pokémon until he comes out, the young Squirtle finally decides to be happy and proud of who he is, and unafraid to let the world know -- and he...

1.0 out of 5 stars This book gets a ''Mega Punch''
.......and a big stinky thumbs down goes to Pokemon Tales!! I hate this series. I saw this in a bookstore one day and it wasn't what I expected it to be. Instead of a cool Pokemon book it was a chubby baby book. It was SOOOOO boring. Like, who would think someone THAT young would like POKEMON????? Who would think someone that young would even KNOW about...

This review is from: Pokemon Tales, Volume 2: Come Out Squirtle! (Board book)
This is a great little book that introduces Squirtle's problem with "coming out" -- a metaphor for the closet that many gay and lesbian people find themselves in due to societal pressure. Unable to play with the other boy pokémon until he comes out, the young Squirtle finally decides to be happy and proud of who he is, and unafraid to let the world know -- and he is greeted by a colorful rainbow, the most well-known symbol of gay pride.

Pokémon's creators deserve kudos for handling this sensitive issue in a very supportive, queer-friendly manner that's subversively appropriate even for young children. Hooray for Squirtle!

5.0 out of 5 stars Our child loves it!, February 14, 2000
This review is from: Pokemon Tales, Volume 2: Come Out Squirtle! (Board book)
Our 3-year old loves this book, and 'reads' it to himself from memory (since he can't read yet) whenever he can.. I would recommend it to anyone who wants to make reading more 'fun' and enjoys seeing their child interact with pokemon, yet may not feel he or she is old enough for the more 'mature' aspects of this phenomena.

5.0 out of 5 stars Teaches kids a good lesson, May 11, 2000
This review is from: Pokemon Tales, Volume 2: Come Out Squirtle! (Board book)
I think this book is very good for little kids. In the book, Squirtle is afraid to come out of it's shell. Squirtle's friends Poliwhirl and Charmander try to get Squirtle to come out, but Squirtle is just too afraid. When Squirtle finally does come out, he gets to see a beautiful sight. This book teaches kids that even though they might be afraid at times, taking chances is better than being a coward.

This review is from: Pokemon Tales, Volume 2: Come Out Squirtle! (Board book)
This is a cute board book that is appropriate for the toddler set. If your child is at all familiar with the characters of the Pokemon video series, he or she may be disappointed: "Come out Squirtle" does not follow the story line of the series at all, rather, it tells a very simple story involving Squirtle and some other Pokemon.Probably a perfect book for a little sibling of a Pokemon crazed kid!

4.0 out of 5 stars Wonderfully Wise!, January 31, 2000

This review is from: Pokemon Tales, Volume 2: Come Out Squirtle! (Board book)
This book is so wise! It teaches an important lesson: Better to be safe that sorry, but you much take chances once in awhile. It is a cute, adorable story. I definitly recommend this book. It is the best in the series, I think.
