Wonderful book for beginners,
By A Customer
This review is from: Poker - Hold 'Em: Book One (Paperback)
I am a professional poker player and when I picked up Mr. Nelson's book POKER: 101 Ways To Win, I was very impressed. I posted my comments on that book with Amazon.com. I vowed to read all of Mr. Nelson's books to see if all of his material was as good. So far, I am pleased. This first book on Texas Hold 'em is a fine primer for the beginner. In the Introduction, Mr. Nelson lays out his goal for the reader. That goal is to make them into a winning poker player. He lays great emphasis on building a good foundation. If you have the right fundamentals, you can enjoy the game more because you will be winning more. This is a "rock" book. By that I mean that Mr. Nelson suggests you play conservatively until you get more experienced at the table. So he suggests that your hand selection be quite narrow. I agree with this and wish that I had known that when I first started to play. Mr. Nelson also writes about the importance of position and patience. And even in the Introduction he cautions the reader to not copy the play of bad players. I look forward to reviewing his next Hold 'em book, the Intermediate one.

Slender but useful volume,

This book gives you the basis for a solid foundation in Hold'em. It is easy to read and well written (unlike David Sklansky's books). I just ordered the next book in the series and I recommend "Poker: A Winner's Guide." I also recommend Mike Caro's "Fundamental Secrets of Winning Poker." Caro recommends Nelson's book, though it's interesting that they disagree on a few points. I highly recommend anything by Nelson or Caro.

I have taught poker classes for many years, mostly Texas Hold 'Em. I have used these three books by Andy Nelson as my texts for 9 years now. I use them because they are great teaching material. They are reader friendly and they allow me to move the students along at a pace that will make them into players who win. They are great primers.

I was not impressed with this book. It is very short, has many simple editing errors (which imply it was a rushed deal), and lacks many of the specifics available in other hold'em books. I realize that Nelson can not go through every situation, and that this is a beginner book, but for the money, I would (and did) purchase "The Winner's Guide to Texas Hold'em Poker" by Ken Warren. It is a much better book.

Book for a beginning poker player,
By
This review is from: Poker - Hold 'Em: Book One (Paperback)
I am a casual poker player. Play in local events. But rarely for money.
The book by Andy Nelson, "Poker Hold'em book one" is in my opinion for the beginner. It has good information. I read this book in about an hour. He lays out which hands to play in early position, middle position and late position. Talks about the benefits of position, and how it can impact your ability to play certain hands. Andy covers defending your blinds, and when it is better to fold and defend another hand. I liked the chapter on "Copying Bad Players". How many times have you seen players win with hands that should not have even been played. If you are new to Hold'em, this is a quick read on the basics and what hands are high percentage winners. And most importantly, it explains how position can affect you even when you have pocket Aces.

This was my first introduction to value betting and some other basic hold'em concepts. Recently I am able to consistently win in play money games, due in large part to this book. When in doubt I still fall back on his starting hands. The book seems conscientiously written to educate. The instructions he gives can be followed.

A pamphlet is more like it,

This is a TINY book, 74 small pages with big type and huge margins - all the text would likely fit on two typed pages (single spaced). Even if all 3 of these books were combined into one, it would still be very short and not worth the $. The advise is very general and not too helpful - along the lines of "play with good hands, and practice so you will eventually learn what a good hand is". A waste of the 15 minutes it took to read.
