Not What You'd Expect,
By Nick Danger (New York, NY) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Pokinatcha (Audio CD)
First of all, I know this is not their best CD, nor is it as good as many other punk CD's of the time, so I need to explain why I gave this 5 stars. Consider the circumstances under which this CD was made: First of all, the boys were Juniors in High School, and they made this record over their Spring Break. For 17-year-olds, there is some very mature song-writing on this record. Secondly, Tooth and Nail Records was just getting off the ground, primarily as a Christian Label, so the funding and producing for this album was very limited. Et Cetera. Now, compared to everything MxPx has put out since this album, this is probably the most raw, and, I guess the most 'streetpunk.' I know Mike (the bassist/singer) has always written their songs, but you have to consider that this was cut before Tom joined. From experience, I know that you can never overestimate the impact of a different guitarist. This guy was pretty good, but stylistically, he was very different than Tom. So, all in all, this is a great punk CD. Excellent songwriting with definite foreshadowing of the catchiness that would come in the following albums.

Real good considering they are only 17 years old.,
By "howitzer" (Vancouver, WA United States) - See all my reviews

I will try to make this review simple to understand and helpful if you are thinking about buying MxPx's debut album Pokinatcha. First of all if you have newer MxPx stuff (Slowly Going The Way Of The Buffalo, Life In General)...be totally prepared for a completely different side of MxPx. Pokinatcha is oozing with 21 tracks of raw, old school punk rock. If you are looking for a slick melodic punk album this is not for you. However, if you are a fan of old school thrash punk...you are going to love this. I am usually not a fan of old school punk, however this one seemed to grow on me. It may have been because I took in to consideration that they are only 17 years old on this CD,and they are pretty dang good. It is probably also because these guys are better old school punkers at 17 than most veteran old school punk bands will ever be. All in all a pretty cool CD to have no matter what if you are fan of MxPx. To have the CD that started it all is kinda sweet to own.

The best Mxpx cd to date,
By Franky "Franky" (Seattle, WA USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Pokinatcha (Audio CD)
I'm not really into MXPX, especially the new stuff, but this is a good album, a kind of old-school punk feeling to it. Again. like 90 pound wuss, the Christian lyrics get a little annoying for an Athiest, but I just try to concentrate on the music. Fun stuff, the only MXPX cd really worth 15 bucks.
