5.0 out of 5 stars Not What You'd Expect
First of all, I know this is not their best CD, nor is it as good as many other punk CD's of the time, so I need to explain why I gave this 5 stars. Consider the circumstances under which this CD was made: First of all, the boys were Juniors in High School, and they made this record over their Spring Break. 2.0 out of 5 stars Worst MxPx CD
Before I heard this CD I listened to Life in General and Let It Happen and loved them but this CD is nowhere near as good as any of their other CDs. I highly recommend all other MxPx Cds except for this one.

First of all, I know this is not their best CD, nor is it as good as many other punk CD's of the time, so I need to explain why I gave this 5 stars. Consider the circumstances under which this CD was made: First of all, the boys were Juniors in High School, and they made this record over their Spring Break. For 17-year-olds, there is some very mature song-writing on this record. Secondly, Tooth and Nail Records was just getting off the ground, primarily as a Christian Label, so the funding and producing for this album was very limited. Et Cetera.

Now, compared to everything MxPx has put out since this album, this is probably the most raw, and, I guess the most 'streetpunk.' I know Mike (the bassist/singer) has always written their songs, but you have to consider that this was cut before Tom joined. From experience, I know that you can never overestimate the impact of a different guitarist. This guy was pretty good, but stylistically, he was very different than Tom.

So, all in all, this is a great punk CD. Excellent songwriting with definite foreshadowing of the catchiness that would come in the following albums.

4.0 out of 5 stars Real good considering they are only 17 years old., January 26, 2000

I will try to make this review simple to understand and helpful if you are thinking about buying MxPx's debut album Pokinatcha. First of all if you have newer MxPx stuff (Slowly Going The Way Of The Buffalo, Life In General)...be totally prepared for a completely different side of MxPx. Pokinatcha is oozing with 21 tracks of raw, old school punk rock. If you are looking for a slick melodic punk album this is not for you. However, if you are a fan of old school thrash punk...you are going to love this. I am usually not a fan of old school punk, however this one seemed to grow on me. It may have been because I took in to consideration that they are only 17 years old on this CD,and they are pretty dang good. It is probably also because these guys are better old school punkers at 17 than most veteran old school punk bands will ever be. All in all a pretty cool CD to have no matter what if you are fan of MxPx. To have the CD that started it all is kinda sweet to own.

4.0 out of 5 stars The best Mxpx cd to date, July 19, 2001

This review is from: Pokinatcha (Audio CD)
I'm not really into MXPX, especially the new stuff, but this is a good album, a kind of old-school punk feeling to it. Again. like 90 pound wuss, the Christian lyrics get a little annoying for an Athiest, but I just try to concentrate on the music. Fun stuff, the only MXPX cd really worth 15 bucks.

5.0 out of 5 stars Buy this, August 3, 1999

Yeah, the first time I heard mxpx was Slowly Going the Way of the Buffalo, and I thought it was all right, but nothing to get all worked up over. I heard Life in General and Let it Happen a bunch of times, too, but never really felt like buying them. However, after listening to this cd, MxPx is THE coolest band ever. Sound like Rancid? No way, that's the Dingees. Like NOFX? No, that's Dogwood. They sound like MxPx, and it's raw and awesome. "The Aspect," "Time Brings Change," "Anywhere But Here," "Walking Bye," and "No Room" are amongst the best songs on here, and among the best in MxPx's surprisingly large repertoire. BUY IT NOW

5.0 out of 5 stars In the beginning..., August 8, 2005
This review is from: Pokinatcha (Audio CD)
...there was a band, and the band's name was Magnified Plaid!!! This has got to be my favorite MxPx CD...maybe only second to "Life In General." This is MxPx's first full-length album, and might I say that it is awesome for a first album. I love all the raw emotion that they put into their music and the raw sound. The quality isn't nearly as high as their later CDs, but in this case, it doesn't seem to matter. Their lyrics are powerful, their music is kicking, and their attitudes are bad to the bone!! This is a must for any MxPx fan or even anyone who is new to MxPx. This is pretty much where MxPx started...so, for those of you who listen to their newest album, "Panic," then you should listen to how they sounded in the beginning and see the difference. This is the MxPx that I will always remember, cherish, and rawk out to when nobody is looking! Check it out today!!

4.0 out of 5 stars Very fast and raw, just not MxPx's best, October 22, 2002
By
This review is from: Pokinatcha (Audio CD)
This cd is MxPx's very first album, and it is very impressive when putting that into consideration. It is very raw, full of energy, and of course its very fast.

"Weak" is one of my all-time favorite MxPx songs, along with "Anywhere But Here". Other highlights on the album include "Think Twice", "PXPX", and "Time Brings Change".

There is one problem that I have with this cd. It is very repetitive. The first half of the album is AWESOME and a ton of fun to listen to, but by the the last half of the album the sound starts getting old. Yuri has practically the same drumbeat throughout the entire record (with the exception of "Bad Hair Day") and by the end of the record, you are dying to hear newer MxPx that is a little more under control and mature. Teenage Politics, the sophomore album, is an album with just as much energy but it is a much better improvement.

If BE&A was your first MxPx cd, then don't get Pokinatcha next. Get either Life In General or Slowly Going The Way Of The Buffalo. Also - the lyrics are blatantly Christian on this album, so if you're bothered by too much "preaching" then you may not like this. But if you have most of MxPx's cds already or you really like their faster punkier stuff, then go get this.

5.0 out of 5 stars MXPX? HARDCORE/PUNK?!! THAT IS CORRECT, May 30, 2001
This review is from: Pokinatcha (Audio CD)
YES! It's true. This album has maybe 2 or 3 new school sounding punk songs on it. The rest of it is mainly hardcore influenced punk rock. Although this is a very young sounding mxpx it still will appeal to any fan of punk rock. Hey, they were only juniors in high school when they made this album. If you liked their newer stuff and do not have a very broad taste you will probably hate this CD but if you're a hardcore mxpx fan and enjoyed let it happen or even teenage politics or life in general this is a must buy!

This is the best MxPx cd there is. This is true punk rock at its best! This is the only MxPx cd that doesn't have any pop-punk in it.So if you like punk rock, get this cd. You won't be disappointed. This is a 5 star cd, hands down!!!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Go out and buy this CD now., January 26, 2004
This review is from: Pokinatcha (Audio CD)
Being one of MXPX's early attempts, they do well. They should've kept this sound instead of opting to go with the poppy punk sound. That was a let down. They do well here though. Pretty much all of the songs are good. Hopefully future CD's will sound more like this.
