I love this book!,
By A Customer
This review is from: The Poky Little Puppy (A Little Golden Storybook) (Hardcover)
This is the sweetest little book. I read it when I was a little girl, and now I am going to buy it for my soon-to-be-born baby. I have always thought of the poky little puppy as a hero for the ones who stop to smell the roses.

It may not be a Caldecott Winner...,

...but the Poky Little Puppy is beloved by children of every generation. Early this summer I saw "Poky Little Puppy" t-shirts for adults being sold at a popular national retail chain near NYU. A few weeks later I still couldn't stop thinking about it, so I went back to buy one. They were all sold out. The store manager (who also was in his 30s) told me that all of their stores were sold out, both retail and online. People kept coming in asking if there was a wait list. I asked him if they were all college students, but he surprised me by saying that there were a fair number of adults. We started talking about our favorite books as children, and both had a good laugh over the fact that we'd loved the Poky Little Puppy as much as any of the classics by Sendak or Silverstein, but that as adults, we'd become blind adherents to the ratings, erroneously assuming that the Poky Little Puppy wasn't "real" children's literature because it won no awards or praise from the critics. As I was walking out, I turned and asked him if he remembered the book's refrain whenever the puppies rolled down the hill. He grinned and, in unison, we both said: "And down they went to see, roly-poly, pell-mell, tumble-bumble, till they came to the green grass; and there they stopped short." Needless to say, this book now has a place on the bookshelf of every child in my family--and they all love it just as much as I did.

Addresses an important issue,

This review is from: The Poky Little Puppy (Big Little Golden Book) (Hardcover)
This was the first children's book to write honestly about the issue of pokyness. The subject is introduced in a gentle manner so as not to unduly embarrass a young listener who is struggling with pokyness. As someone else put it, "the puppy is the child who has failed to progress beyond the mirror-stage, surely." I couldn't agree more, or recommend this more highly for any parents with poky children.

THE SWEETEST LITTLE BOOK,

This review is from: The Poky Little Puppy Special Anniversary Edition LGB (Special Edition Little Golden Book) (Hardcover)
Since there is always a child at my home, I was running out of books for them and decided I needed to add a few. I am a big fan of books written years ago and decided to purchase this book. I am so glad I did. It is the sweetest story, and I am always asked to read the book over and over again.
I find that books written a long time ago have wonderful lessons and appeal to children a great deal more then many contemporary children's books. It is a lovely book and I encourage anyone with children to purchase it.

I recently bought the cheaper edition for my future niece/nephew, didn't have time to wait for this edition to ship, but will be buying this edition for myself and our children. Both editions are nice, but this edition has the original illustrations while the newest edition omits the illustration from the first page-- in my opinion the best picture of all, the puppies digging under the fence! This edition may be more expensive, but the book is not complete without that picture.

Minutes To Read Yet Never To Be Forgotten,

Jointly reviewed on Tyler's request. :-) Ellie: "A children's classic to rate among the most heartwarming of the genre. The story of the poky little puppy with his innocuous mischief, mixed bag of luck, love of desserts, and fondness for digging holes under fences, is a delight." Tyler: "It's nice!" Unanimous agreement from two lovers of the finest in Little Golden Book literature...

Not the book from my youth,
This review is from: The Poky Little Puppy (A Little Golden Book Classic) (Hardcover)
I was disappointed in the quality of this book. It seems flimsy and not of the quality I remember from when I was a child. In fact, the cover isn't as wide as the book pages, so they stick out and are sure to get tattered with time. Since it was only a few bucks I might try to find another copy that is of better quality.

kindle edition: not too bad!,

This review is from: The Poky Little Puppy (Little Golden Book) (Kindle Edition)
i've been looking for a children's book to have on the kindle for my son just-in-case but have been skeptical of the choices available since there are few books and they will be viewed in black and white. i decided to take a chance on this one since we own it in color and know the story well.
for 88 cents, it's not too bad. the text is easy to read, the pictures aren't too bad in grayscale and you can certainly read the story. some of the pictures are small because they are wide while taller illustrations fill the whole page. there are a few blank pages but whatever. all-in-all i wouldn't replace a colored, tangible copy with the kindle edition, and i wouldn't introduce the child to this classic on the kindle, but as a familiar story to have on the kindle for him when he needs something to look at it's worth the 88 cents

This was my favorite book as a child and I own my own copy now as an adult. I buy this as a gift for every baby shower I attend. It's something different (most people don't buy books and if they do they buy Goodnight Moon) so you never have to worry about someone else buying it. The best part? Books create memories. I can still hear my grandmother's voice as she read my favorite books aloud to me and it's something I cherish now that she's passed away. Share a book with a child. Share THIS book with a child and create great memories.

This is such a cute story! A curious little puppy just can't be bothered to do as he's told. I recommend reading this book to your children and then making them some rice pudding. They will appreciate the connection. (I did.)
