Book Description

7 and upCreatures in White Series
Deep in her winter den near the North Pole, a polar bear gives birth to two helpless, toothless, furless cubs, that, by spring, grow thick white fur, sharp claws, and teeth and follow their mother into the snowy world, learning how to protect themselves.

Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 2-5?Dramatic full-color photographs fill the pages of this large book and serve as a stunning backdrop to the brief text that tells of the first years in the life of a pair of polar bear cubs. Basic physical facts about these arctic animals are covered both in the text and in a two-page addendum of miscellaneous "Bear Facts," but the focus is on this harsh and spectacular environment, and the adaptation that allows survival in a world that is frozen for most of the year. While some readers may be frustrated by questions that encourage them to spot bears thoroughly hidden in the snow, the storylike quality of the narration will appeal to new or reluctant readers. Use this as a read-aloud for younger children or market it as nature photography for older ones. "Creatures in White" is a promising new series.?Susan Oliver, Tampa-Hillsborough Public Library System, FL

From Booklist

Ages 5^-8. Beginning with a mother polar bear who will soon give birth and showing the development of the young bears until they become independent, this book from the Creatures in White series follows the animals through two years. Each double-page spread features a large, full-color photograph of the bears and their habitat, illustrating two or three paragraphs of text. Lively enough to read aloud to a primary-grade class, the narrative gives a sense of animal life in polar regions, though it focuses on one species. A dozen fast facts are appended. On the last page, a world map indicates where polar bears live. An attractive introduction to the subject. Carolyn Phelan
