With its lively text and cozy illustrations, this is the perfect book for little ones who are feeling fidgety before bedtime. And after sharing this delightful adventure, even the most wide-awake listeners will be enchanted into falling fast asleep.

PreS-Gr 1-When it becomes too hot to sleep, a baby polar bear ventures out to the "summer grasses at the edge of the lawn." This is "where the wide-awake meet" and dance the Polar Bolero until they become tired and return home and are gently tucked into bed. Oddly, the animal's home is depicted as a realistic-looking vintage refrigerator, which is not an appropriate home for any living being. It is not clear why it is too hot in the refrigerator, or why the story is not set in a polar region as the title might imply, and the baby and parent look more like teddy bears than polar bears. At times, the illustrations and text do not match. For example, the text states, "you DANCE in your dreams," but depicts animals that are neither dancing nor sleeping. Instead, they are hanging on to winged creatures and riding in a hot-air balloon. The cheerful, bright, and large watercolor illustrations might envelop adult and child as they share this bedtime story with words that arch and wave across the page, but there are plenty of better-executed, fanciful, and playful stories that will lull youngsters to sleep.

This was the favorite bedtime story of one of my son's.,

This review is from: Polar Bolero: A Bedtime Dance (Hardcover)
This is a lovely story, notwithstanding any concerns you may have about living in refrigerators. The story is lovely, with beautiful illustrations and interesting pairings of animals. The story gives you an opportunity to talk about leaving the house at night, about the wonderful things you can do in a dream that you cannot do when awake, and how (when all is said and done) there is no place more special than being back in your own bed, tucked in by your mom or dad to sleep. Some times we would use it to count certain animals, sometimes we used it as an "I spy" book, and sometimes we just read it over and over. My son, now 10, wants to make sure we keep a copy for him to read to his own children. I highly recommend it.

I took a look at this book this afternoon ... seems like living in a refrigerator is a bad thing to suggest to wee ones as a possibility. "Just climb on in and close the door ..."
