4.0 out of 5 stars Unexpectantly entertaining
I didn't buy this book at Amazon but picked up a brand new copy at a local thrift store for $75 cents when I was looking for new reads. Given the thrift store price I just pulled about 10 books neither of which I had ever heard of before. In consequence, "Polar Quest" was the first (and so far only) book of the "Rogue Angel" series for me, also, I hadn't known about "Alex...

2.0 out of 5 stars starting to get painfully bad, April 27, 2009
I'm mostly through Polar Quest and already have the next book in my possession but I'm saddened by the decline of the quality of the writing the past couple books and not quite sure who's writing Annja because this isn't the Annja from the early books. I understand the whole team of writers idea, being a writer myself, but shouldn't everyone involved have the same basic concept in mind for particular recurring characters? The recent Annja is a bit of a dingbat, you'd think that as she has more time spent with the sword she'd get smarter not dimmer...

Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
I have read every book in this series and have been expecting something new. Unfortunately, this is not it. While the setting is interesting and could make a visually intriguing movie, the only reason for Annja in this story was the tie to Garin.

It is almost as if the writers don't know what to do to further the concept and are churning out stories without strong tie-ins to the underlying mythology of the series. Short of 'the sword may have helped me heal faster' and the usual, 'my senses have been heightened,' this was nothing but an adventure story featuring a strong heroine.

Three stars only because I am a fan of the series and expect things to get better... otherwise, two.

1.0 out of 5 stars the writers of the series, April 7, 2009
This review is from: Polar Quest (Kindle Edition)
for the most part i get the concept. i like the concept of the globe trotting female indiana jones. i just wish all the different people who write this series. had to read the previous books. first.

this one was a little bit lame. too many dumb things. hope the next writer has a better grasp of the concept. read it at the book store. wait for the next one

1.0 out of 5 stars the wrong writer, January 28, 2009
This series is usualy a fun fast read but with them pushing out so many in a short time they have added new writers who don't understand who Annja is. Jon Merz has written at least two of the more recent books Warrior Spirit and Polar Quest bolth I couldn't finish they were just too out of character.I'll go to the bookstore and check the copyright page before I buy now.

I didn't buy this book at Amazon but picked up a brand new copy at a local thrift store for $75 cents when I was looking for new reads. Given the thrift store price I just pulled about 10 books neither of which I had ever heard of before. In consequence, "Polar Quest" was the first (and so far only) book of the "Rogue Angel" series for me, also, I hadn't known about "Alex Archer" being a team of writers rather than an individual author before reading the book.

With zero expectations whatsoever and mostly looking for some nightstand fodder, I have to admit that I was pleasantly surprised by this book. The setting - Antarctica - is interesting and unusual, the writing is quite compelling, and the key characters are mostly believable, even amiable (with the exception of "Gavin"), and "Annja Creed" makes for a lovely female version of "Indiana Jones". Obviously, this is not J.R.R. Tolkien writing, but the Alex Archer team does a well-enough job to get the reader hooked on page one and keep the reader interested throughout the book.

This is a nice and entertaining read that makes for a wonderful beach vacation companion. It is, however, not the right book for anyone looking for literary genius.

1.0 out of 5 stars Should be Titled "Boring Quest", January 19, 2009
By
For the record I like Annja and the overall concept behind the Rogue Angel series -- that is why I keep reading them even though the writing has been going downhill after the first couple. If Alex Archer is a real author he has been having more and more of this series written by others (look by the copyright section to see another contributor mentioned on this one). The first couple were fine and fun reads. Since then he has Annja forget what she can do or has learned in the past and has her make mistakes that I don't believe this character would make.

This one has one unforgivable sin in addition to above -- it is just plain boring. There is little to no action and once again Annja is making some mistakes that she wouldn't make. I may purchase future ones (like I have been) hoping against hope that the author will make these right once again. Perhaps he (if it is Alex) should just slow down and take some time -- maybe just one a quarter?

4.0 out of 5 stars 16th installment in the Rogue Angel series, January 29, 2009
Annja Creed is a part-time archeologist, part-time tv host of Chasing History's Monsters, and full-time adventurer.

Annja's latest adventure takes her all the way to Antarctica, when an old friend requests her help on a mysterious dig. But as soon as she arrives, Annja finds herself attacked by strangers trying to kill her. As if the extreme weather isn't danger enough, Annja must uncover the reason behind the attack and what exactly her friend has unearthed in such a remote place.

As usual, danger and mystery surround Annja's exploits, and this time the suspense is increased tremendously just because of her location. Unable to remain outdoors for very long because of such extreme temperatures, only adds to the feeling of peril that always follows the heroin. But besides the setting, the characters are fantastic too. And the mystery and suspense culminates to the very end with a fabulous climax. With many surprises along the way, Polar Quest is an outstanding addition to the Rogue Angel series.
