Pros: In conjunction with the heart rate monitor and the stride sensor this product does a great job of gathering data which makes training more precise and fun

Cons: The cost is prohibitive compared with the features that are available for less on other models.

I purchased the RCX3 after conducting what I felt to be significant research. I was wrong. The RCX3 is more expensive and appears to be a higher end computer than the FT60 and the FT80. Unfortunately some key features that are available on the FT60 and FT80 are not available on the RCX3. Namely the ability to load training programs in to the computer. The polar website is great and has some really useful tools that help you track your training. One feature which is enticing but unavailable for the RCX3 is the downloadable training sessions. The website displays a great set of training sessions for biking and running. I downloaded the running endurance session and saw that it was loaded on my "Diary" and my calendar on the polar site. I could not get the sessions to load on the RCX3 and could not even manually assign training data that had been recorded to the training program on the website. It turns out that these features are only available on certain products, even though they advertise training programs. After reading the complaints in the forums on the Polar site and the Polar representative responses it is clear that even though they imply that that the features exist for the RCX3 they do not explicitly say that you can download any training to the RCX3.

Also if you are interested in the STAR training features do not buy the RCX3. These features are only available on the FT60 and the FT80. Maybe on some others but definitely not on the RCX3.

I would recommend doing thorough research before spending almost $300 on this.

Buying a sport watch depends on the purpose, and needs of your body, exercise routine, and personal preferences. In terms of your body, you want something that fits. I have a 6-7 inch wrist, I am 5'5", and I weight about 155. The wrist strap is not wide, so it can give off the impression that it may not last. I do not know because I returned the watch due to the lack of the second purpose: exercise routine.

Exercise routine

If you need a watch to track your running and heart rate, speed, and distance, then this is a very good watch for that function. It includes the ability to connect to the wireless usb stick included that permits you to add workouts and goals from the website. Worked flawlessly on Mountain Lion 10.8. However, the device itself, and this is my fault for not realizing this, lacks timed intervals. There is distance and speed intervals, but not timed intervals for circuit training. This was a deal breaker and I have to pay $6 for the return.

Finally, your personal preferences.

The watch does have a backlight feature, and the watch itself is rather clear to view, but in the middle of a run it may be challenging. There are a few features where you can change the view of how the workout is being displayed, which may work out for you. Essentially, the watch actually looks very basic and almost boring. There is no alarm function, but it does keep track of the date, along with other information regarding your body and age.

Overall, I think the watch is phenomenal, it would definitely receive 5 stars if it included time intervals. I do indoor training and I need something to help me keep track of what I do. A vibrate feature may be too much to ask, but the option to enable or disable it would be great too. Lastly, with basic watch functions, I think this would also incur more 5 star ratings and more sales.

I use this watch for my workouts to monitor my heart rate. I use my heart rate as a pacing data point. That is I like to ramp up my rate and then take it down to a certain point before once again ramping back up incrementally. The display is large enough for me to read at a glance and so far the watch has been very reliable.
My only issue after nearly a year of usage is that the battery on my chest strap has died and even after replacement I can't seem to get the two device to reconnect. Not sure of the issue why, but it is bothersome.
However I must rate this highly after (as noted) a full year of pretty tough activity.

Upper left button fell off after just 2 weeks of using it. Didn't expect such bad quality from Polar watches.
UPDATE
now all the buttons have fallen off.

I spent a lot of time researching this product on Polar's website and all over the web. Considered buying the RCX5 until I tried one on and could see it was definitely not designed with a woman's frame in mind. Initially ordered the FT60 but had buyer's remorse before it even arrived because of the fact that everything had to be purchased separately and all of its components were older generation. I had basic needs-wanted to be able to track running, cycling, swimming and other exercises. Needed distance for running indoors and out and heart rate for all other activities. I was excited about the RCX3 because it seemed to be a scaled back version of the RCX5 and was bundled with the stride sensor and data transfer. When it was all said and done, I got the run package with newer technology for less than what I paid for the FT60. I ponied up an extra $60 for the hybrid sensor so I could track my swimming. The RCX3 does not have a sport profile for swimming, but I figured I would just use the Other Sport profile for swimming. Flash forward a few weeks, I have been loving this for running and cycling but my attempts to track hear rate while swimming laps at the gym have failed. I thought at first it was a user error and was back at it again today and still the same problem. Swapped out my Hybrid for my husband's, which was working perfectly for him on his RCX5 in the same pool where I was swimming. Still couldn't measure heart rate. So I am back home today and researching some more and find the fine print on the Hybrid Wearlink that says, although it is compatible with the RCX3, it requires 5kHZ compatible device to track HR during swimming. And guess what? The $200+ RCX3, isn't, but the older FT models are. What?? So upsetting really because I am into this purchase $300, all packaging is thrown out and the device doesn't do what so many forums and other shopping sites said it could do by just buying a different monitor. Not happy.
